Laverne R. Gilson, 85, of Oelwein, Iowa died Thursday afternoon, June 22, 2017 at Grandview Healthcare Center in Oelwein.

Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Monday, June 26, 2017 at Peace Lutheran Church in Oelwein with Rev. Michael Holmen officiating.
Visitation: 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein and after 9:30 A.M. Monday at the church.
Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein with military honors by the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 Honor Guard of Oelwein.

Memorials may be directed in his name to the family or Peace Lutheran Church.

Laverne Russel Gilson was born on October 16, 1931 in rural Oelwein, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Sarah Paulinda (Thomas) Gilson. He attended school at Oelwein, Maynard and graduated from Wadena High School in 1949. Laverne served from 1952 to 1954 in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany for 1½ years of his enlistment. Laverne married Beverly Louise Mall on May 22, 1953 at St. John Lutheran Church in Fairbank, Iowa. He worked at Super Value in Oelwein from 1954 to 1994. Laverne retired in 1994. He was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church and was a member of the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 of Oelwein and Oelwein Historical Museum. Laverne and Bev enjoyed many winters in Texas. He also enjoyed square dancing, camping, woodworking and painting.

Laverne is survived by his wife: Beverly Gilson of Oelwein; daughter: Linda (Randall) Gloede of Denver, Iowa; 2 granddaughters: Angela Gloede of Johnston and Kristi (Tyler) Bottoms of Urbandale; great grandson: Jonah Bottoms; brother: Iner Gilson of Raymond; and a sister: Ilyene Primmer of Dunkerton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son: Gary Gilson; granddaughter: Heather Nicole Gilson; and a sister: Sharon Hammond.
