Roger “Butch” Wessels, 77, of Lamont, Iowa, entered into his eternal rest on Friday, January 13, 2017, at his home.

Roger Francis Wessels was born January 15, 1939, the son of Ed and Lillian Helms Wessels in Lamont, Iowa. He attended the local schools and graduated from Lamont High School with the class of 1957.

Butch was united in marriage to JoAnn Karsten on July 30, 1960, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont. To this union were born four children: Michael, Kirk; Jeffery, and Amy. They moved to Chicago where Butch worked for a few years at Continental Airlines. They moved back to Iowa and Butch went to work for John Deere in Waterloo. He worked there for 36 years until retiring in 1998.

Butch was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Lamont Fire Department for over 25 years, and the Iowa Quarterhorse Assn. for most of his adult life. He loved racing and had some fine Horses: Iowa Red Wing, Miss Jillact. Drill-o-war, Miss Iowa State, and many others. He was a devoted fan of Iowa State University athletics.

He is survived by his three children: Michael Wessels of Lamont, Kirk (Laura) Wessels of Lamont, and Amy Wessels of Lamont; four grandchildren: Alex (Elena Perez), Jordan (Sawyer Amling), Tanner, and Chance Wessels; one great granddaughter Racy JoAnn Amling; eight brothers and sisters: Babe (Paul) Wurdeman of White Bear Lake, MN; Ladd (Mary Lee) Wessels of Dundee; Judy (Chuck) Tudor of Cedar Rapids; Deets Thomsen of Menomonee, MI; Larry (Nina) Wessels of Colfax, IA; Dick (Betty) Wessels of Cedar Rapids; Diane Harris of Lamont; Carmen Wessels of Cedar Rapids; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife JoAnn, his son Jeffrey “Smack” his sister Debbie Kremer and his special friend Ann Sanders.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. Interment will be in ST. Albert’s Cemetery at Lamont. Casketbearers will be: Donnie German, Rusty Gibbs, Joe Fannon, Randy Sullivan, Don Rayner, Mary Ann Dozark, Denny Gaffney and Doug Sage. Honorary bearers will be: Gene Ehlers, Verle Bohner, Mark Guy, Harvey Adams, Danny Moyle, Dave Koch, Bob Bachman, and Gary Egloff.

Visitation will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church In Strawberry Point from 4 PM until 7 PM Tuesday, Jan. 17 and after 9:30 AM Wednesday.
