The many friends in Dubuque of Judge J. J. Ney, of Independence, will be exceedingly pained to hear that his wife died at Independence last night. Mrs. Ney had been an invalid for some time past. She had been taken to New Mexico for her health, but the change failed to benefit her, and some weeks ago was removed to her home. The funeral will be held Tuesday.

The Funeral to Be Held Tuesday
Morning – Sketch of Her Life
~
INDEPENDENCE, Sept. 18. – Special: Mrs. Judge Ney died at her residence in this city on Saturday last at 7:30 p.m. The death of the most estimable lady comes to us almost with the force of a personal bereavement. In the circle of our acquaintances we know of no one who possessed in a more eminent degree the qualities that go make up an exalted womanhood. Her maiden name was Frances E. Colby. She was born in the city of Chicago about thirty-four years ago; was a graduate of the Convent of Notre Dame in this city, receiving her diploma in June, 1878. In the fall of the same year she was united in marriage to J. J. Ney, who was then the mayor of this city. She was the niece of Mrs. Col. Mulligan, of Chicago, and was very much devoted to her aunt. Mrs. Ney was a woman of unusual strength of mind. The literary societies of the city frequently asked her for compositions and she never failed to submit papers replete with original thought couched in captivating phraseology. Two years ago while attending the funeral of the late Richard O’Brien she contracted a severe cold from which she never recovered. She spent eighteen months in Santa Fe, N. M., in hopes of finding relief. The coveted boon did not come and two weeks ago her husband brought her home to die in the midst of those who loved and esteemed her.

The funeral services will be held Tuesday, the 19th inst, at 10:30 a.m.
