Viola M. Snitker, 86, of Waukon, died Sunday, November 14, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 17 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Viola Marcella Snitker was born August 28, 1918 in Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of Louis Melvin and Jessie N. (Anderson) Hanson. She was baptized at home and confirmed at St John's Lutheran Church. Viola graduated from Waukon High School.

On February 6, 1937, she married Oliver Snitker in Crown Point, Ind. Viola and Oliver operated the Polar Bear Ice Cream Store in Waukon from 1939 to 1942, They moved to Baraboo, Wis., for a couple of years and then returned to Allamakee County where they farmed in Ludlow Township from 1945 until 1968. Viola was busy on the farm and did a lot of the field work. She also helped at the Ossian Sales Barn when she and Ollie owned it for a number of years. In 1968 they moved to Waukon where she has been a resident of Good Samaritan Center since 1999.

Viola enjoyed traveling and would often go with Oliver on hunting and fishing trips. The couple also spent 18 winters in Arizona in the 1960s and 70s. She also liked traveling to visit her children and caring for her grandchildren.

Survivors include three children, Jerome (Eddie) Snitker, and Nadine Szabo, both of Hastings, Neb., and Mary Lynn (Joe) Jenkins of Waukon; five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren; a brother, Bob (Carol) Hanson of Ione, Wash.; and a sister, Dona (Corkey) Stoffel of Pleasant Hill, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Oliver, who died in 1993; a step-grandchild and two step-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Dayle Szabo; and an infant brother.

Casketbearers are Jeff Ferris, Brian Bechtel, Steve Bakkee, Yannis Brownell, Darrel Winkie and Gary Kamp.
