Hannah McDowell Evans

Mrs. Hannah McDowell Evans Passed Away on Last Sunday. Hannah McDowell Evans was born March 10th, 1838 in Clarion county, Pennsylvania, and died at her home in Eden township, Benton county, Iowa, January 8th, 1905. She was married to Mr. Samuel M. Evans January 10th, 1867. To this union was born two sons and three daughters, one daughter having preceded her to the better land. She was for many years a christian. Ten years ago she had a severe stroke of paralysis and since that time has been a great sufferer, but was sustained by a bright prospect of eternal life, often expressing a great desire to depart and be at rest. She selected for her funeral text John 14:2 3.

The funeral was conducted by I.M. Underwood at the Prairie U.B. church, January 10th, and was attended by a large number of people.

The family of the deceased are very grateful to their many friends for their sympathy and help during the long affliction and in this time of bereavement.

Samuael Evans

Samuel Evans was born in Carroll county, Indiana, January 7, 1837, and died in Vinton, January 3, 1908.

Mr. Evans came from Indiana to Benton county, Iowa, October 6, 1856, returning to Indiana in 1860, when he enlisted in Company H, Indiana Veteran Infantry, being promoted to corporal; he served in that capacity in Company B, 17th Indiana. He was wounded in the battle of Stone river, but after a short furlough again entered the service and received an honorable discharge August 8, 1865. He became a member of the G.A.R. June 7, 1885.

At the close of the war he returned to Benton county, Iowa, January 10, 1897, and united in marriage with Miss Hannah McDowal. This union was blessed with five children, three daughters and two sons, one daughter dying in infancy. The surviving children are Misses Dora and Alice of Vinton, Otto of Benton county, and John of Salt Lake City, Utah. He also leaves two brothers, John Evans of Frankfort, Ind; David Evans of Edgerton, Kansas; and two sisters, Mrs. David Wilson of ------------- and Mrs. P.M. Wilson of Vinton.

He was proceeded to the glory by wife and companion, who departed this life January 8, 1905.

Bro. Evans was raised in the Presbyterian faith; was a member of Central church for several years; later he united with the Prairie U. B. church, of which he was a member at time of death. He was a devout and earnest christian, a loving husband and father, a good neighbor, a kind, sympathetic friend to all with whom he came in touch.

He is gone but not forgotten. He is dead yet he lives, and will continue to live in the thought and esteem of all who knew him in life.

The funeral service was held from the Prairie U.B. church Monday, at 2 p.m., S.S. Smick, pastor in charge.
