DOLLIVER, Jonathan Prentiss, (uncle of James Isaac Dolliver), a Representative 
and a Senator from Iowa; born near Kingwood, Preston County, Va. (now West 
Virginia), February 6, 1858; attended the public schools and was graduated 
from the University of West Virginia at Morgantown in 1876; studied law; 
admitted to the bar in 1878 and commenced practice in Fort Dodge, Iowa; city 
solicitor of Fort Dodge 1880-1887; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first 
and to the five succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1889, to August 
22, 1900, when he resigned to become Senator; chairman, Committee on 
Expenditures (Fifty-sixth Congress); appointed as a Republican to the United 
States Senate in 1900 to fill the vacancy in the term ending March 3, 1901, 
caused by the death of John H. Gear; reappointed and subsequently elected for 
the term beginning March 4, 1901; reelected in 1907 and served from August 22, 
1900, until his death in Fort Dodge, Iowa, October 15, 1910; chairman, 
Committee on Pacific Railroads (Fifty-seventh through Fifty-ninth Congresses), 
Committee on Education and Labor (Fifty-ninth and Sixtieth Congresses), 
Committee on Agriculture and Forestry (Sixty-first Congress); interment in 
Oakland Cemetery.
