Some county teachers submitted these "school reports" to their local newspapers. The following were found in Indianola papers for the school year 1887-1888:


Report of the Scotch Ridge school (Allen Twp.) the first month of the fall term, 1887:

Report of the Mt. Moriah school (Otter Twp.) for the first month ending Sept. 30th, 1887:
Number of days taught 20; number of pupils enrolled 36; daily attendance 30. Names of those attending each day: Bert and Dora Graham, Edd and Lizzie Hogan, Leslie Wilson, Grace Rogers, Charley, Art and Nora Chumbley. The following is the average per cent. as a result from examination: Della Trobough 86; Bert Graham 80; Henry Trobough 87; Charles Cline 86; William Hogan 85.
B grade: Charlie Chumbley 93; Edd Hogan 91; Bertha Shaver 91; Grace Rogers 88; Rosa Chumbley 81; Lizzie Hogan 79; Olla Larnson 77: Dora Graham 76. The school has made rapid advancement in Language work during the last year; this I find can be taught in all grades. A resolution of thanks from teacher and scholars is extended to the trustees for their expense and trouble of refitting the room with more seats and repairing the room in various ways, also for their economy of doing the work on Saturday's.

Report of Palmyra school (Palmyra Twp.) for the Inst month of term ending October 26, 1887: Days taught, 20. Number enrolled, 60 average daily attendance, 49. In closing the year's work in this school I desire to express my thanks to the school board for the faithful discharge of their duties toward both school and teacher; also to school patrons and friends, from whom I have received only kindness and encouragement. High school: Number days taught, 40; number enrolled, 21; number belonging, 17; average attendance, 16.5; deportment, good; visitors for the month, 23. Average per cent. of pupils in examination: Advance grade: Bertha Johnson, 98. A grade: Letha Hall, 95; Ida Frank, Kate Peebler, Nannie Peebler and Grace Anderson, 91; James Woodyard, 90; Ellen Woodyard, 83; Iva Hall, 88. B grade: Laura Proctor, 94: Pearl Hall, 93; Jennie Peebler, 92; Tina Mosher, 91; Eva Frank, 92; Maggie Thompson, 90; Henry McKinney, 90. Four did not pass. Pupils not absent last month: Kate, Nannie and Jennie Peebler, Pearl Hall, Tina Moeher, Iva Hall, Henry McKinney.
All pupils have manifested an interest their studies. The school now has a vacation of four weeks after which the teachers will again resume their work. Report of Hawkeye school (Liberty Twp.) for the month ending Oct. 28, 1887:
Number of days taught, 20; whole number of pupils enrolled, 41; average number enrolled, 39; per cent. of attendance, 95. Names of those attending each day: Charley Mills, Able Mills, Ada Smith, Maud Sones, Fermon Sones, Emerson Sandy, Vernie Nysonger, Letha Hendrickson, Ollie Poush, Bert Thorn. The following is the average per cent as a result from a written examination: Charlie Mills, 98; Able Mills, 86; Cora Spencer, 83; Laura Mills, 93. B grade, Ada Smith, 88%; Adda Grater 96%; Sopha Poush, 91%; Norval Mills, 95%; Sanford Sones, 86; Maud Sones, 83%; Glem Smith, 86.
The school has made rapid advancement in language work during the last year; this I find can be taught in all grades. The school closed Friday, with a spelling match after school it was largely attended. Mattie Proctor, of Liberty Center, was the champion speller.

B grade: Carrie and Pearly Stevens, Vernie Forbs and Emily Rowlin, 95 per cent. each: Joseph Stephens, Donnie Forbs and Lucy Wonderlin, 90 per cent. each: Fred Wonderlin, Wm. Powers and Wm. Banks, 95 per cent. each; Barbary Miller and Isabelle Banks, 80 per cent. each. C grade: Aggie and Ella Gavin, 100 per cent each; Wertie Forbs and Bryant Harlan, 98 per cent. each; Lawrence Miller 90 per cent.; Stella Leggett and Katie Powers, 96 per cent. each; John Miller and Freddie Remhold, 92 each. Report of the school in Luke district, (Jackson Twp.), for the term ending March the 9th, 1888: Number of pupils enrolled, 35; number of days taught, 70. The following are the per cents. for the term, on a thorough examination: Errett Parish, 86; Court. Pariah, 90; Lizzie Parish, 95; George Nuzum, 76; Roy Nuzum, 81; John Nuzum, 78; Jud Nuzum, 70; Edd McCahill, 72; Joe McCahill, 97; Mark Gillispie, 90; Annie Pierson, 88; Tilla Limpke, 94; Katie Kimpke, 97; Christa Limpke, 93; Lizzie Luke, 90; Turner Carleton, 92; Howard Parish, 85; James Nuzum, 97; Bud Nuzum, 96; Theodore Lippold, 85.
Twenty persons visited the school during the term and although the roads were bad, several persons visited the school the last day. The school had literary exercises in the afternoon, and as we were about to be dismissed for the last time, the pupils surprised the teacher by presenting him with a fine autograph album, which was very much appreciated. The school closed to the satisfaction of both parents and pupils.

Report for the Jacoby school (Lincoln Twp.) for the term commencing April 16, 1888, and ending June 8, 1888, with a picnic at Mr. Glasscock's mill, where all seemed to enjoy themselves very much, especially the children who seemed to think it a real treat and enjoyed themselves both going and returning. Upper room: Number of days taught, 17; whole number enrolled, 30; average number enrolled, 29; average daily attendance, 26.6. Average per cent. of those who made 85 in the examination which was a written review of the whole year's work: Seventh year: Belle Angel, 96 per cent.; Anna Bissett, 94; Julia Baldwin, 93; Mary Graham, 90; Emma Wright, 87; Pearl Jones, 85. Fifth year: Sadie Kirkhart, 94; Edith Morley, 90. Fourth year: Rosa Compton, 93, Maud Compton, 92; Alma Smith, 88; Geraldine Jones, 87; Emma Smith, 86.
Lower room: Number of days taught, 17; whole number enrolled, 42; average daily attendance, 39.2. Names of visitors in both rooms: Ettie Kirkhart, Mrs. Sam Shupe, Emma Myers, W. D. Baldwin, Mrs. Aul and Dr. John Miller. Names of those attending during the year who can complete the course of study next year, if they will work diligently: Fay Bartram, John Mitchell; Mollie Cochran, Anns Bissett, Paul Jones, Lena Clevenger. Bertha Crosson, Julia Baldwin, Maud Myers, Jennie Beeman, Belle Angel, Emma Wright, Mary Graham and Mollie Wright. Misses Beeman and Clevenger could teach a fall term of school and then complete the course, while some of the others would find it necessary to review one or two studies of the seventh year. Although there will be no promotions to the upper department, nearly all will be advanced on grade in their studies. If we should never again meet the children of the Lacona schools as your teachers, we can wish you nothing better than that our successors may be good instructors as a very large majority of you have been good pupils during our connection with the school, and if we continue, we hope that you will meet next September fully resolved to work with us even more earnestly than you have in the past.
