Highland Cemetery

Mahaska Co., NE part of the SW 1/4 of Section 31, Township 74, Range 15

The original paving from 1908 is on the east side (Memory Lane). The north edge of the cemetery, 1 Acre, was donated in 1846 by Nicholas Scribner.He also built the first Inn in Eddyville,

a four-room 2 story house of logs, west side of the square. The next section south of the original 1 acre, was added in 1887, and a Revolutionary War soldier, died at age 96,

Richard Scarrem (1759-1856) lays in rest an addition south to the 1 acre in 1887, is considered the potters field. There was a 2nd addition in 1900, conveyed for $1, to the Eddyville

Cemetery Assoc., of Wapello County.

Friday January 24th, 1902 at the east entry of Lost Creek Coal Co., #2 shaft, 2 miles NE of Eddyville, a mine explosion occurred.

The following week, the funerals were held for the 20 miners who died there that day. Five were buried in St Mary's Catholic

cemetery, across the road (east) from Highland Cemetery. Church service was held for 12 of the men at the Congregational Church,

located across from St Mary's church. There were not enough hearses, so the coffins were taken up the hill on horse-drawn sleds.

The weather was -15 degrees, and the snow was deep. The graves are in a row about 100 yards west of the east line of what is section B.
