[Homer Ellis Kimpton]

Homer Kimpton, 64, Last Rites Held October 25

Funeral services for Homer Ellis [Willis] Kimpton, 64, of Gravity, held October 25 at the Gravity Christian Church, were conducted by Pastor Perry Cozadd.  Mr. Kimpton died October 22, 1972, at Rosary Hospital in Corning.  Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Homer Willis Kimpton was born to John A. and Ethel Beery Kimpton near Guss, Iowa, on November 6, 1907.  His early life was spent in the Wesley community where he received his education.

He started farming for himself on the farm where he was presently living.  He was called to the service of his country in July 1942, and spent 40 months, including 18 months overseas with a tank destroyer battalion of the 30th infantry division, which fought its way across France, Holland, and Belgium.  While in the service he attained the rank of sergeant and was presented many medals.  In November 1945, after peace was declared, he arrived home and resumed farming the following spring.

On December 19, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Moore and to this union two sons were born, Homer Kirk, who died August 12, 1955, and Craig Allen of Bedford.

He was baptized into Christ for the remission of sins in 1955 and served his master faithfully the rest of his life at the Gravity Christian Church, which was exemplified throughout his illness.  He never uttered a word of complaint, telling his family to accept it as His Father's will.

He was a member of the Sunlight Lodge, No. 459 and also the American Legion Post of Gravity.

He was preceded in death by a son Homer Kirk, his parents and his brother, Paul.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth; son, Craig Allen, and wife, Beverly [Perkins]; granddaughter, Susan Lynn, whom he loved dearly; sisters, Edith Hendrickson, Lenox, Ia., Vida Snyder and Lois Anderson, Winterset, Iva Heller, Burlington Junction, Mo.; a brother, Wilbur Kimpton, of Council Bluffs; and many other relatives and friends.

Homer was gifted with a keen mind and capable hands and spent many hours in his workshop perfecting some machine or gadget to help himself, his family and his community.  He was highly respected by all who knew him.

George Posten, 60, Last Rites Held September 26

Funeral services for George Lyle Posten, 60, of Creston, formerly of Gravity, were held in Creston September 26 with Rev. J. Heber Miller officiating.  Mr. Posten died at Greater Community Hospital in Creston September 23, 1972.  The Gravity V. F. W. post rifle squad conducted military rites at the Gravity Cemetery.

George Lyle Posten, son of George Payne and Maude Fleming Posten, was born August 25, 1912, in Taylor County.

He spent his younger years in and near Gravity, Iowa, and was graduated from the Gravity High School.

He was married to Helen Gertrude Abarr October 3, 1936, at Plattsmouth, Nebraska.  Two children were born to this union, Terry Lyle, who died in infancy, and Jane Lynnette.

He was a veteran of military service in World War II, serving with the 1629th Engineer Construction Battalion in the Philippines and Japan from December 21, 1943 to April 25, 1946.

He and his family lived for a time in Corning, Iowa, before moving to Creston in 1949.  He was an employee of the Central Iowa Power Cooperative, formerly Southwest Federated Coop.  He was the third person employed by the company, beginning work for them before any buildings or lines were constructed.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1797, of which he was also past commander.  He was also a member of the American Legion and the Elks Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter Jane, Mrs. Joseph Shattuck, and her husband of Santa Fe, New Mexico; a brother, Carrol, of Corning; a sister, Mrs. Alyene Bush of Santa Fe; an uncle, Dean Fleming of Corning; nieces and a nephew: Mrs. Carolyn James of St. Paul Park, Minn., Mrs. Marjean Israel of Omaha, Nebr., Mrs. Linda Watkins of LeClaire, Ia.; and Mr. Edd Bush of Espanola, New Mexico; a number of cousins and other relatives.

A memorial fund was established for the American Cancer Society.

Services Will Be Held Friday For Henry Glass

Funeral services for Henry Glass of Bedford will be held Friday, March 26 at 2 p.m. in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Duane Hunt officiating.  Mr. Glass died in his Bedford home Monday.  Interment will be at Fairview cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday at 7 p.m.

Henry Glass, 68 Final Rites Were In Bedford 

Funeral services for Henry Franklin Glass, 68, of Bedford, held March 26 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. Duane Hunt. Mr. Glass died March 22, 1982 at his home having been seriously ill since last October. Bedford American Legion Post 164 extended military honors with interment at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Henry Franklin Glass, son of James and Nora Glass, was born in Lee County, Virginia July 8, 1913.

He lived in Virginia until age nine and grew to maturity in Taylor County, Iowa where he attended the public schools and Baptist Church.

On August 31, 1947 he was united in marriage to Betty L. [ois] Woodward at the First Baptist Church in Bedford and they lived in the Bedford vicinity.

To this union four children were born: John, Nancy, Peggy and Carol.

He was engaged in farming all of his married life near Bedford.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford and a Veteran of World War II.

Mr. Glass was preceded in death by his father, his mother and one grandson.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty; his children: John Glass and wife, Norma, of Bedford; Nancy and husband, Jim Poore, of Hanover, Il.; Peggy Adams of Essex, Ia.; and Carol and husband, Ed Spencer, of Lenox; three brothers: Palmer, Don and Ray Glass, all of Moses Lake, Wa.; three sisters: Mrs. Howard (Hazel) Miers of New Market; Mrs. Lawrence (Mary) Miers of Gravity; and Mrs. Harold (Pauline) McCune of Bedford; 13 grandchildren; and cousin, Mrs. Max (Thelma) Yeary of Rose Hill, Va. who was reared in the Glass home.

He was a kind and considerate husband and father and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Lloyd Richey, 52, Has Fatal Accident

Lloyd Richey, 52, a former resident of Gravity but of Omaha in recent years, died at Douglas County hospital in Omaha, Sunday, February 8, following head injuries received in a fall.

Funeral services [were held] at the Gravity Methodist Church at two o'clock Thursday afternoon, February 12, Rev. Frank Greenwood officiating.  Burial [was] in Washington cemetery at Gravity.

Lloyd D. Richey – Lloyd D. [elbert] Richey, 52, of Omaha, died Monday at a hospital there following a short illness.
Born in Omaha, he spent most of his life at Gravity, Iowa.
Survivors include: widow, Thelma; three sons, Harold L. and Burl W., both of Council Bluffs, Delbert L., serving in the Navy at Treasure Island, San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Belva B. Jerome of Golden, Colo., and Mrs. Flora M. O'Dell of Gravity; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Scoville of Alhambra, Calif., Mrs. Howard Anderson of Omaha; brother, Thomas A. Richey of Greeley, Colo.; 10 grandchildren.
The body was forwarded from the Meyer Funeral Home to the Shum Funeral Home at Bedford for services and interment.

Mrs. Anna Reed Dies In Colorado

Mrs. Anna Agee Reed, wife of the late Miles Reed of Monte Vista, Colorado, and a former resident of Gay Township and Blockton, died January 31.  Burial was in Monte Vista.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. R. S. Laser; two sons, Carl and Marion Reed, all of Monte Vista.  Also by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. G. B. Reed of Blockton and Mrs. L. P. Jenkins of Sheridan, Mo.

Mrs. Wm. C. Dowlin Dies In California

Mrs. William C. Dowlin, 89, died January 11, 1959, at her home in Los Gatos, Calif.  Funeral services were held there and the remains were taken to Corvallis, Oregon and laid beside those of her late husband.  

Hannah Vandyke Fowler was born January 1, 1870, near Muscatine, Iowa.  Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. [dward] R. Fowler [Mary F. Riggs], came to Taylor County in 1881 and to Bedford in 1884, when Mr. Fowler was elected to the office of County Auditor.

Hannah Fowler was married May 5, 1891, in Bedford, to William C. Dowlin and after marriage they lived on a farm four miles west of Bedford where five children were born to them.  They sold the farm in 1908 and moved to a farm near Corvallis, Oregon where the husband died in 1937.  After his death Mrs. Dowlin lived for some years at Oswego, Oregon and in San Francisco, Calif. but the last 10 years of her life were spent in Los Gatos, Calif.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Rita Carpenter of Riverside, Calif., Mrs. Doris Frank of Los Gatos, Calif.; and by a son, Reade Dowlin, who formerly published a weekly newspaper in Camas, Wash., but is now retired and living in Portland, Oregon.

Mrs. Dowlin was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Hoskinsin of Stillwater, Okla., Mrs. Nettie Gambrill of Rapid City, So. Dak.

She is survived by six sisters, Mrs. Inez Myers of Spokane, Wash., Mrs. Margaret Haddock and Mrs. Hazel Haddock of Shoshone, Idaho, Mrs. Susie Payton of Santa Susanna, Calif., Mrs. Edna Evans of Monterey Park, Calif. and Mrs. Olive L. Dunning of San Francisco, Calif.
