DUGAN ~ CONLEY FAMILY
GUY DUGAN FAMILY
Guy Lee DUGAN was born March 30, 1897 to Edwin and Matilda Belle MOSIER DUGAN. On November 6, 1916, he married
Mayme Nevada McGEHEE. Mayme, Guy and their four children, Leland, John, Mildred and Mary Margaret, moved
west of Maloy on "Uncle Tom SHAY'S" farm in the spring of 1926 and worked for Uncle Tom for $50 a month until 1933
at which time they moved to Liberty, Missouri. Here, Guy hauled coal for William Jewell College. They moved
back to Maloy in 1934 and purchased a house from Uncle Tom SHAY, up on the hill. He lived there for 50 years.
During this time, he again took up employment with Uncle Tom - this time for $1 a day! Guy started in the
trucking business in 1933, hauling coal and later did general trucking with sons Leland and John. He
trucked until 1952 at which time Leland carrred on in the trucking business and John went into the service.
Guy then worked for the county running a maintainer. He also worked for Jesse STEPHENS and Cleo LYNCH. Mayme
and Guy were the parents of four children: Leland, who still resides in Maloy; Mildred AUSTIN of Kansas
City, Missouri;
Mary Margaret, now deceased; and John of St. Joseph, Missouri. Mayme died July 23, 1958.
Guy began work at the Clarinda Mental Health Hospital on March 3, 1957 where he met Opal WOODS, who also worked
there, and they were married September 28, 1959. Both retired back to Maloy in 1965 where they resided until
they moved to the Heritage Park Apartments in Mount Ayr on June 20, 1984.
NOTE: Guy Lee DUGAN died at the age of 100 years on September 26, 1997. Mayme Nevada (McGEHEE) DUGAN,
the daughter of John Franklin and Myrtle E. (WHEELER) McGEHEE, was born in Maloy on October 19, 1899, and
died July 23, 1958. Opal M. (WOODS) DUGAN was born in 1916, and died in 1997.
They were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Guy's father Edwin DUGAN,
the son of George Washington and Hannah M. (FRY) DUGAN, was born in
Champaign County, Illinois on July 11, 1865, and died at the age of 73 years on September 2, 1938. He married
Guy's mother Matilda "Belle" MOSIER February 10, 1886, Caledonia, Iowa. Belle, the daughter of Abraham and
Emma Ann (MACKIE) MOSIER, was born in Ringgold County, Iowa on April 1, 1867, and died August 26, 1940. Edwin
and Belle were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
MARY & LELAND DUGAN FAMILY
Leland DUGAN, eldest son of Guy and Mayme DUGAN, moved to the Maloy area in 1926 and attended Maloy High School.
He graduated with the Class of 1935. On March 29, 1938, he married Mary Ellen HAYES of Bedford, youngest child
of Samuel and Mary Jane TAYLOR HAYES. They established their home near Maloy. They are the parents of four
children: Betty Lou DUGAN CONLEY of Maloy; Barbara Ann DUGAN GOODARD of Boulder, Colorado; Eddie Lee DUGAN
of Mount Ayr; and Michael Allen DUGAN of rural Diagonal.
Leland worked for George WARIN, Luke HART and John
WARIN. For several years Leland was in trucking partnership with his father Guy and his brother John. Later, in
1942, he became an operator of a general trucking business hauling livestock and grain himself. Eventually he
entered the grain business and sold feed. He was a grain buyer until he retired in 1979. Mary cooked at the
Maloy [Consolidated Schools] lunchroom for a while and later was employed as a seamtress for the Mount Ayr Manufacturing Company.
In June of 1979 Leland sold his truck after 37 years in the trucking business and the couple is now retired.
They spend the winter months in Mission, Texas, but still reside in Maloy during the remaining months. They
are the grandparents of eleven and have three great-grandchildren.
NOTE: Leland Eugene DUGAN was born February 24, 1917, and died April 21, 1995.
Mary Ellen (HAYES) DUGAN was born April 11, 1919 in Omaha, Nebraska, and died at the age of 89 years on
July 3, 2002. Leland and Mary Ellen were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
BETTY LOU (DUGAN) & RONALD LEE CONLEY FAMILY
Betty Lou DUGAN CONLEY is the eldest child of Leland and Mary DUGAN. She has lived parctically all her lifetime
in Maloy. She attended grade school at Maloy and graduated from MACHS [Mount Ayr Community High School]. She was
employed by the Ringgold County Hospital in the office prior to her marriage and afterwards worked at GMET
and SWANSON doctor's office in Lamoni. She married Ronnie Lee CONLEY of Diagonal on January 3, 1958. Ronald
is the son of the late Thomas CONLEY and Cora BYERLY.
Ronald graduated from Diagonal High School,
served in the U.S. Army in Korea, and was employed by Derry Oil Compnay in Lamoni before coming to Maloy.
They still [1987] live in Maloy and have two married daughters. The oldest daughter, Cynthia Anne, was
born November 24, 1958 and graduated from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines and married Martin
Luvern TONSFELDT of Ogden on August 21, 1982. Martin has two daughters. Ciny works as a registered nurse in
labor and delivery at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Des Moines and Martin farms in the Ogden area, where
they make their home. Duaghter Colleen Dianne joined the family on April 8, 1961 and graduated from
Americana School of Cosmetology in Des Moines. She was the owner-operator of her own beauty shop in Mount
Ayr for a time. She married Edward Alan MINNICK of Kellerton on April 10, 1982. Colleen now works at O'Bryan
Brothers in Leon and Ed works for Industrial Hardfacing in Lamoni. They have a daughter Kylee Breanne who was
born on November 12, 1984, and the family resides in Kellerton. Kylee is frequently a welcome visitor in
Grandparents CONLEYS' home. Betty was appointed postmaster at Maloy on January9, 1965, a position she still
[1987] holds. She is very active in various aspects of the postal department. Betty devoted many long hours
to serving as chairperson for the Maloy Centennial celebration. Ronald is employed by WARIN Oil Compnay.
He was manager of the home office in Maloy for 27 1/2 years until the station closed on March 8, 1986, at
which time he was transferred to the Mount Ayr station where he is now employed. Their pride and joy is
the achievements of their two daughters and their families.
BARBARA DUGAN GOODARD
Barbara DUGAN GOODARD resides at 3960 Arbol Court, Boulder, Colorado 80302. Barbara works for Storageteck, a
computer company, as a material specialist planner. Husband Frank is a plumber. They have three children
and the family enjoys four-wheeling in the mountains and camping out. Son Craig is 16 and is a sophomore
at Boulder High School and works for Ideal Market. David is 20 and works at an auto body shop. Frank, Jr. is
22 and works as a plumber. He and his wife Tomi are the new parents of a daughter, Ashly Kayla, born
December 8, 1986.
CINDY & ED DUGAN
Eddie Lee DUGAN, third child and oldest son of Leland and Mary DUGAN, was born and raised in Maloy. He
attended Maloy grade school and is a MACHS [Mount Ayr Community High School] graduate. While in high school,
Eddie participated in wrestling. After graduation he worked for a few years for Irving Clothing Store. On
August 21, 1966 he was married to Donna Rae HARTMAN of Mount Ayr and to this union two sons were born,
Darryn Lynn on May 7, 1969, and Christopher Lee on July 21, 1972. On August 20, 1986 he married Cindy
SHELLEY of Mount Ayr. She has three sons, Richard, Jeremy and Matt. Cindy is a graduate of Creston Hair Tech.
Cindy, Eddie and Chris make their home in Mount Ayr where Cindy is empolyed at Shamrock Cafe and Cindy's
Beauty Salon and Eddie is employed at Jobe Chevrolet, Buick and Pontiac Garage as a mechanic.
JOAN & MIKE DUGAN
Michael Allen DUGAN is the youngest son of Leland and Mary Ellen DUGAN. He was born March 26, 1953 and graduated
from the Iowa School for the Deaf [Council Bluffs] in 1972. Here he was active in football and wrestling. He
is married to the former Joan ZIMMERMAN of Diagonal. They have three children: Andy, 13, Dennis, 7, and Michelle,
3. Their children attend Mount Ayr Community schools. Mike works at Grant City, Missouri at the GeeCee Cap
Factory. They live on a farm north of Mount Ayr.
