De Votie Cemetery

Dewitt De Votie Gravestone, Polk County, Iowa

De Votie Cemetery is located Beaver Township, Section 22, in what is now Thomas Mitchell Park.

Transcribed from the Polk County Conservation gravesite sign:

"Dewitt Devotie's Gravestone
DEWITT DE VOTIE DIED
Jan. 26, 1869 AGED 64 ys. 2 ms. 2 ds.

In the mid 1800s Dewitt and Cornelia Devotie arrived in Iowa with their family from New York. The Devotie family owned and farmed 205 acres on part of what is now Thomas Mitchell Park. Upon his death he wished to be buried on this hilltop, remaining on the land he once owned. Devotie's gravestone is made of limestone surrounded by a metal wrought iron fence. It is believed the fence was put in place to keep cattle from rubbing and knocking down the gravestone. No other family members are buried at this location."
"How vain are all things here below, How false and yet how fair. Each pleasure hath its poison too, And every sweet a snair."
"Seek ye the Lord while he may be found. Call ye upon him while he is near."
