The Knute Hanson Family


Kunte Hanson was born in Govik, Walders, Norway, June 16, 1857. There, he made his boyhood home, and in young manhood learned the trade of a tailor. In 1883, at his home in Norway; he married Miss Julia Gilbertson. Julia was born in Norway as Guri GuldBrandsdatte but Americanized her name upon coming to America.  The Hanson's came to this country in 1889 with two children born in Norway, and settled at Beaver Creek, Minn. They lived in Beaver Creek for about a year and a third child was born there. They moved to Luverne where two more children were born. In 1895, Knute brought his family to Rock Rapids. 

Upon arrival in Rock Rapids, Mr. Hanson immediately set up business as a tailor.  He soon became well known and respected as a highly skilled tailor who turned out high quality clothing.

Knute and his wife Julia were the parents of eleven children. They were Mary, Hans, Knute Jr., Gilbert, Malinda, Julia, Clara, Alfred, Albert, Amelia, and Olaf. Albert, who was Alfred's twin died shortly after birth.

Clara on the family's front porch at 108 Greene St.  This was taken circa 1914-1918, the years of both the flu pandemic and WWI. The Red Cross in the window signifies the Hanson family was willing to help with both major events.

Alfred Hanson

Clara Hanson was born June 1, 1897 in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Knute and Julia (Gilbertson) Hanson. She was raised in Rock Rapids and graduated with the Class of 1917 from the local high school there.

Clara's grandson tells that she had always said she did some teaching before getting married. He found this picture

of her with a class of students that is hand dated 1918-19.

Clara lived at 1108 Greene St N in Rock Rapids until she married Clarence Lawrence Anderson in 1921. By the time of the 1930 Federal Census, Clara and Clarence, along with their 5 year old daughter, Betty, resided in Casselton, North Dakota. In 1940, they were residing in La Mesa, San Diego County, California. Both Clara and Clarence passed away in California.  He passed away in 1961.  Clara survived him until February 2, 1977.
