Captain Sampson's Company
Civil War
1861

Address of Rev. Mr. Shock

On presenting a Copy of the New Testament to each member of Capt. Sampson's Company, previous to their departure.

GENTLEMAN OF THE KEOKUK CO. VOLUNTEERS:

Your friends of this place and vicinity, your parents, brothers, sisters, and fellow citizens, desire through me on this eventful occasion to present you a Memento and Keepsake that may be worthy of your reception and preservation.

We appreciate your prompt offer of your services to your country. You go forth from us at the call of duty and patriotism. Our cherished Government is threatened and endangered by the rebellious hands of its children, and without any justifiable cause or plausible excuse. The heart of this great nation is stirred to its depths to preserve its very existence; and impelled we hope by patriotic devotion, you go forth to the defense of the citadel of liberty and all our precious hopes. We bid you God speed. We pray Heaven's richest blessing upon you. We wish you to carry with you something to remind you daily of Christian friends at home. In selecting a toke of remembrances nothing more suitable could be found than that blessed Volume which is Heaven's own rich blessing to man. The Book of books, heaven-inspired and divinely authenticated, containing the instructions, counsels, authoritative direction and precious promises of our Father in Heaven; the light of life, the revealer of God to man, the infallible directory, the great store-house of saving knowledge, the safe manual, the tender counselor of the sorrowing and distressed, the guide of youth and the support of age; this precious book is worthy your entire confidence and affectionate regard. Let it be daily and devoutly consulted. It will teach you how to live and how to die. It is the soldier's best companion. In the camp its precepts and consolations have afforded guidance and engendered a peaceful, quiet and subordinate spirit. In the field of conflict it has buoyed up and strengthened the soldier's heart and nerved his arm, made him valiant and victorious in battle and generous and human in victory.

Citizen soldiers: accustomed to the heavenly lessons of the Book at home, it will remind you of happy Christian firesides, of the domestic altar, of a father's prayers and a mother's admonitions and tears, and of the sanctuaries of your boyhood. These tender associations will do you good. Let them be enshrined in your heart of hearts, and interwoven with your noblest resolves, your bravest endeavors and your warmest aspirations.

One of the brave military commanders of our country, who subsequently filled the Presidential chair never retired at night during a long and eventful life without the serious perusal of his Bible. Go ye, and do likewise.

This book will teach you true patriotism and inspire you with true courage. Cromwell's Invincibles were schooled by the Bible and disciplined in the prayer meeting. They could understand the orders "Trust in God and keep your powder dry."

"He who fears God need have no other fear."

Go, soldiers, in God's fear, with brave and cheerful hearts.
