Iowa City Genealogical Society (ICGS)

THE SOCIETY

The Iowa City Genealogical Society (ICGS) in Johnson County, Iowa, was founded in 1967 by a group of people interested in tracing their roots and in helping others who wanted to research family history. As the Society developed, additional broader objectives evolved to include general promotion of genealogy by preserving and disseminating historical data, acquiring genealogical references, and supporting the Iowa Genealogical Society (IGS) and the State Historical Society of Iowa library (SHSI) in Iowa City.

MEETINGS
Regular meetings are normally held on the last Saturday of each month at the LDS Library, 2730 Bradford Drive, Iowa City, Iowa. Meetings begin at 9:30 a.m. The meetings normally include a presentation on a genealogical topic. Meeting notices and cancellations will be emailed to all members and can be found on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ICGS.IA/

NEWSLETTER

ICGS publishes a newsletter ten times a year and it is distributed via e-mail to all members.  A typical newsletter contains announcements of ICGS meetings as well as conferences and national meetings, a short description of queries received, information on current projects of ICGS and often some general genealogical news items and tips.

PUBLICATIONS

ICGS has published many Johnson County records such as marriage records from 1839 to 1903, gravestone records of all cemeteries (published mid-to-late 1980's), indexes for some county histories, early land map records, and various censuses. The publications are available for purchase through the IGS https://iowagenealogy.org/ in Des Moines. For a list and prices of these publications see pages 16-17 of the IGS catalog available for viewing at the following link: IGS Catalog
