Iowa High School Final Year and Lineage Project Over 1,300 current and former Iowa High Schools have pages on this site. Of these, only around 360 are currently active members of the IHSAA and IGHSAU. So many schools have closed or consolidated over the years that it is difficult to know the specifics of the ending of each of them. This list is an attempt to highlight year-by-year the changes that took place on the Iowa High School landscape. School changes prior to 1950 are still a work in progress. Since 1950, I have been able to compile a list of every school taking part in the IHSAA sectional and district basketball tournaments each year and identify when schools stopped having teams in those tournaments. Changes recorded on this list reflect changes as they took place in boy's basketball (except in a few cases where I have reason to believe the school may have continued having its own sports teams in other sports). In some cases I was able to identify a school which a closing school joined that they later separated from. There may be other instances besides the ones recorded here. This list, however, can serve as a starting point for anyone wanting to research this topic further. Final years for sports versus school districts This site exists to preserve the history of Iowa High Schools sports, so final years are listed according to the final year of the school's sports program. There are many schools which continued to have high school classes for some time after the sports program was shut down. This has been possible since 1983 due to the IHSAA allowing schools to share sports programs with other schools. There are also cases prior to the early 1960s (when the state began to mandate that school districts have a 12-grade high school) that schools had 9th and 10th grade students (which in some cases would not have competed at the varsity level) while upper-grade High School students attended school elsewhere. In cases where grade sharing or consolidation took place in a different year than sports programs began to be shared, I have tried to note it. You may also see on the side bar that I have pages for school lineages (which are breakdowns for every current high school of the all the high schools that once existed that make up the current school). At present, these pages have not been updated with all of the years listed on this page, though all the schools on those pages are correct. Syncing these two parts of the site will be a future project. The foundation for the former schools portion of this site were laid by the IHSAA's School Colors and Mascots project. There are some schools (found at the bottom of this page) that I have not seen listed in any high school basketball results. That doesn't mean the school necessarily didn't have sports teams, but several of these schools also did not have information regarding colors and mascot in the IHSAA project. If you have information on any of these schools, I welcome you to email me at the link at the bottom of the page. 2019: Clay Central-Everly is absorbed by Spencer.
