1869
- The Wesleyan Methodist church society was organized in 1869. 1869-1870 - The Myron Hinkley home, Section 22, Amherst Townshp, (near Marcus) was a meeting place for the faithful of the neighborhood. 1871 - They initiated a Methodist-Episcopal Sunday School on April 12, 1871. 1872 - The first Methodist church in Cherokee County was dedicated January 21, 1872. 1880 - The Methodist denomination was established in Quimby. 1881 - By this time, the village of Marcus raised $2,000 to build a church at the souteast corner of Pine & Maple. 1881 - The Methodists south of Marcus were organized into the Simpson-Bethel charge. 1881 - A Methodist church in Aurelia was dedicated. 1881 - A Methodist church in Silver was dedicated. 1882 - A Methodist church in Meriden was dedicated. 1882 - The Wesleyan Methodist church, still standing, was dedicated in 1882 in Pilot Township. 1883 - The Simpson-Bethel parishners rejoined the Marus Circuit but maintained their own Simpson-Bethel church, built in 1884 on the southeast corner of Section 28, Amherst Township. Marcus Methodist denominations and/or churches were built and/or dedicated, thereafter, as follows: 1884 - Amherst 1884 - Grand Meadow 1885 - A tornado swept Marcus June 14, 1885, destroying the original Methodist Church, erected on Block 6 only 4 years previous. A second church was built mid-block, south of the Gund ma nsion on Maple Street, and this served for 15 years. 1887 - Afton 1888 - Cedar - a society was formed and met at the Morris school house in 1888. 1889 - Washta - denomination was established. 1888 -89 - Diamond Center - church was dedicated 1900 - Marcus - With incorporation of the Simpson-Bethel brethren into the Marcus church, there was a need for expansion. The expanding Marcus Methodist congregation secured a choice building site west of the centrally located Marcus High School and erected an $8,000 edifice. It was dedicated Nov. 29, 1900, entirely free of debt. 1961 - Marcus - plans were formulated for building of a modern church. 1963 - Marcus - The Ellis Holmes family gave the church a site at the south edge of Marcus. 1966 - Marcus - Groundbreaking ceremony for the new church. 1967 - Marcus - The last service in the Old Grace Methodist Church was held April 10, 1967. 1967 - Marcus - The first service in the new Grace United Methodist Church was Sundaya, May 7, 1967.
