Smithland Oldest Settler Passes Away
Wm. Turman Dies At Home Last Thursday

William Schuyler Turman was born in LaFayette County, Wisconsin on April 2, 1847 and died at his home at Smithland, Iowa, March 27, 1930, aged 82 years, 11 months and 25 days.

The Turman family came to Little Sioux Township in August of 1853 when there were not more than half a dozen families in this territory, William, who at the time was past six years of age, has spanned in his life the whole of the history of this community. The family settled on a farm about two and a half miles northwest of Smithland. This place was the home of Mr. Turman until he went to Kansas City in 1900.

He returned to Smithland in 1919 and since that time has made his home here most of the time. For a number of years, he helped care for his brother Tome and after his death made a home for his sister, Malissa.

There were six children in the family of his father and mother, three boys and three girls, but one of these remains to mourn the passing of her last brother, Mrs. Elizabeth Hendricks of Houlton, Oregon.
