Merlin H. Albers, 82, of Sioux City died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Augustana Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Del Olivier officiating. Cremation will follow the service Wednesday. Graveside services will be Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Monahan Post 64. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Albers was born April 15, 1918, in Grant Township, Iowa, the son of Henry and Mary (Nicolaisen) Albers. He graduated from Holstein (Iowa) High School and attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II, as a staff sergeant stationed in the Pacific Theater. He moved to Sioux City in 1946.

He married Frances E. Jeffrey on Feb. 25, 1950, in Laurel, Neb. He was employed as an office manager at National Wood Works, and then with R.W. Rice until retiring. His wife died Sept. 6, 2000, in Sioux City.

He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, North Riverside Lodge 662 A.F. & A.M., Sioux City Consistory, American Legion Monahan Post 164, Breakfast Club and the Optimist Club, where he was a former president. He also volunteered at the Soup Kitchen.

Survivors include two daughters, Carole and her husband, Robert Perrin of Sioux City, and Melinda Morin of Lilburn, Ga.; two granddaughters, Amanda and Melissa Morin; a brother and his wife, Henry and Dorothy of Holstein; a sister, Alice Hartshorn of Bishop, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold.

Pallbearers will be R.W. Rice, Tom Ericson, Jack Becklund, Ray Chaussee, Don Schneider, Rich Van Evera and Bert Ericson.

Memorials in his name may be directed to Augustana Lutheran Church.
