Mr. JAMES HOPE, the subject of these memoirs, was born in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania, Jan. 27th, 1808; moved to Iowa and settled near Birmingham, April 1852; died in Birmingham, Iowa, July 14th, 1880. He was married to Miss Margaret P. Dinsmore, who still survives him, February 12th, 1829. They have participated in the joys and sorrows of life for over fifty-one years. Few married couples have lived together so long and enjoyed each others society so well. This fact makes it so hard for his now bereaved widow, that it would be almost unbearable were she not comforted by the hope of a glorious resurrection. He united with the Presbyterian church, at this place, about ten years ago, and in the consistency of his life, and integrity of his character, has been an honor to the church and to the cause which he espoused.

Father Hope leaves behind him a wife and seven children to mourn his loss; Though confined to his room, and much of the time to his bed, for several months, yet the frail body was borne so gently to the tomb that very little, if any, pain was experienced. He died in the triumphs of living faith, and leaves behind him an imperishable name in the hearts of all who knew him.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. James Hunter, were held at his late residence, on Thursday afternoon, after which his remains were followed to the cemetery by a large concourse of relatives and friends, all realizing that a kind husband, an indulgent father, and an esteemed citizen had been taken from among them. “Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright; for the end of that man is peace.”
