Cleda Wellborn

Cleda Wellborn, 88, of 1400 Second Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa died Wednesday, March 2, 1988 in Valley Hospital at Las Vegas, Nev., where she had been visiting, following a sudden illness.

She was born Sept. 5, 1899, at Cantril, and taught school for 49 years, including 24 years in the Cedar Rapids School District, where she taught Latin and English at Washington, Mckinley and Kennedy high schools prior to her retirement. She had taught in Iowa high schools at Troy, Cantril, Bloomfield and Cherokee before coming to Cedar Rapids in 1944.

Miss Wellborn was educated at Kansas State Teacher's College, Washington State University and University of Iowa. She was a member and one of the first women elders of First Christian Church, a life-member of state and national education associations, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Theta Chapter, a teacher's honorary society and Chapter DK of PEO.

Miss Wellborn also was a member of Religious Book Club, College Club, state, national and Cedar Rapids retired teachers organizations, and a 70-year member of Order of Eastern Star No. 437 at Cantril.

Survivors include three sisters, Donna MacFadden of New Brighton, Minn., Maxine Keeler of Cedar Rapids and Iona Dodds of Burlington.

Services were held Saturday, March 5, 1988 at Turner Chapel East, by the Rev. Robert Bromley of First Christian Church officiating with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery.
