John E. Scott

John E. Scott, son of Frank and Ella Glascock Scott, was born Aug. 2, 1902 in Vernon and died on the evening of Thursday, July 19, 1984 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 81.

On Sept. 7, 1935 he married Letha Alexander at Keokuk. She remains with their three sons, Duane of Fort Madison, Deane of Dallas City, Ill., and Donald of Fort Madison. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, a great granddaughter, other relatives and friends. A brother and a sister preceded him in death.

John was a bookkeeper for the Bonaparte Sale Barn for many years, as well as for Davidson Motor Company in Keosauqua. He later was employed by the Van Buren County Conservation Board.

He was a long-time active member of the Bentonsport United Methodist Church, and was one of the leaders in the restoration of Bentonsport as a founding member of the Bentonsport Improvement Association. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, Van Buren County Historical Society, and had served on the board of the Van Buren County Development Association. He gave a full measure of time and effort for the improvement of his community.

Funeral services held on Sunday, July 22, 1984 at 2 p.m. in the Bentonsport United Methodist Church, with Rev. Louise Spears officiating. Interment was in the Vernon Cemetery. Pedrick Funeral Home of Keosauqua was in charge of arrangements. A memorial was established for the Vernon Cemetery and gifts may be left at the funeral home.
