David Menning Obituary
David Lee Menning, 68, of Bloomington, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026 at Martin Health Center, Westminster Village in Bloomington, Illinois.

A memorial service will be held at Evelyn Chapel, 1301 North Park Street, Bloomington on Monday, January 19 at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Gary York will be officiating. Interment will be private.

David was born September 20, 1957 to Alden and Connie Menning in Orange City, Iowa. He married Cindy Hofmeyer on October 14, 1976, and they had three children, Susan, Thomas, and Lea.

David graduated from Floyd Valley High School in 1976. He then earned his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics in 1980 from Northwestern College, Orange City, Iowa, and a Master of Science in Statistics in 1982 from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska. David achieved his Fellowship from the Casualty Actuarial Society in 1986, and his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriting (CPCU) designation in 1995. He had a distinguished 35 year actuarial career at State Farm Insurance, finishing as Countrywide Pricing Director in the Property and Casualty Actuarial Department. David volunteered with the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) from 1987-2011, most notably serving as the Vice President of Admissions from 2008-2011, garnering the Matthew Rodermund Lifetime Service Award.

David was a lifelong athlete, lettering in college baseball and football, and later playing on community baseball and softball teams. One of his proudest moments was officiating a NAIA national championship college football game. David also founded and coached a middle school travel baseball team (the Bullets) benefiting dozens of student athletes in the community. An avid sports fan, David enjoyed cheering on the New York Yankees, the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Boston Celtics, the Chicago Bears, and any team that his children or grandchildren were playing on. In his retirement David often played golf at Ironwood Golf Course where he shot two holes in one. David's favorite way to end the day was sitting on an upside down bucket casting a fishing line into the neighborhood pond.

David will be remembered as a devoted husband, dedicated father, proud grandfather, brother and friend. He leaves behind a Christian legacy of dignity, steadfastness, faithfulness, kindness, and generosity. David was characteristically the quietest in the room, however would often have something meaningful to contribute. He had a terrific sense of humor, and often caught people off guard with a witty quip or favorite movie quote. David's family will miss traveling with him but will not lovingly miss his non-stop math quizzes.

David is survived by his wife of 49 years, Cindy; three children, Susan (Dan) Nelson of Thompson's Station, Tennessee, Tom (Sydney) Menning of Fox Lake, Illinois, Lea (Jim) Nelson of Bloomington, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Avery and Romey Nelson, Riley, Leighton, Margot, and Lucy Menning, and Evelyn Nelson; and two siblings, Bruce (Cathy) Menning, and Kaye Bennett. David was preceded in death by his parents, Alden and Connie Menning.
