Moos, Dominick 1821 - abt mid 1860s & Margarethe Clemens Family

This biography of the Dominick Moos family was taken from a family story in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church book of Granville Iowa page 147. It was further researched and composed by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society.

The Dominick Moos story from St. Joseph’s church book page 147. (there are some obvious errors)

The Moos family immigrated to the United States and to the Granville area in 1854 from Germany. The head of the family was Dominick Moos and his wife was Margarethe. Their children were Peter, Suzanne, Henry, Ben or Barney, Maggie and Catherine. The name was also spelled Mois, Moes or Moss at this time. Dominick died in 1872 and Margarethe in 1905. Suzanne married Jacob Luenster and died quite young without having any children. Henry married Elizabeth Penning from Granville and moved to Dell Rapids, South Dakota. They had four children.
Ben married an Irish girl named Anna and had one adopted daughter. Margaret married John Eulberg and had six children. Catherine married Dominick Berg. Peter was the line of the Moos family still in Granville. He was born in Germany in May of 1850 and came to Granville when he was four with his parents. He married Margaret Schaak in 1890 in Granville.. She was born in 1873 in Germany. When they were married he was 40 and she was 17 years old and had been in the United States only a year. Peter ran a saloon and served the luncheon for the dedication of the church. Their children are: Katherine (Mrs. Nick) Smiles, born 1893; Marie (Mrs. Nick) Maharas, born in 1895; Peter, born in 1897; Henry born in 1899; Margaret (Mrs. Nick ) Prevas, born in 1902; Susan (Mrs. Felix) Halverson, born in 1904; Nicholas, born in 1907; and John born in 1909. John died quite young.

1860 Census of Belgium Ozaukee, WI. Dominique Mooss 38 born about 1822 in Luxembourg, his wife was Margaretha Mooss born abt 1822 Luxembourg, children were Peter Mooss 11 , Bernard Mooss 10, Catherine Mooss 5 . And Suzanna Mooss

1870 census of Belgium, Ozaukee WI. Margarethe Moos was 48 born abt 1822 Luzembourg, evidently a widow, with children Peter 27, Catherine 15 , Susan 12 and Margarett Moos 9 .

The immigration year is all over the years from 1854 – 1857. Daughter Suzanne inicated it was July 1, 1857 on ship Edgar Stringer, however upon finding the record not much correlates. In that entry Daniel Moos 43 and Margaret 35, Children Jacob 15, Catherine 13, Mary 7, Henri 6, Fenny 5, In the story from the church book it was 1854. Peter indicates 1856.

Dominick died before 10 Jun 1870 Ozaukee, WI. Submitter tried many methods but couldn’t come up with the exact date and place of the death of Dominck in Wisconsin. It was in the earlier 1860s because Margarett was born about 1861 and then the births stopped.

Dominique ‘Dominic’ Moos /Mois was born 1822 Luxembourg, Germany, died before June 10, 1870 Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. He married 13 Oct 1846 Luxembourg to Margareth ‘Margaret’ Clemens 1821-1905. From the Luxembourg Church and Civil registrations 1601-1923 His father was Dominique Mois of Luxembourg and Mother was Suzanne Reding 1793-1846.

Margarethe Clemons Moos born 7 May or 13 Sep 1821 Koerich, Canton de Capellen, Luxembourg died 11 Jun 1905 at Granville IA buried in St. Joseph’s cemetery Granville IA. She was married 13 Oct 1846 Steinfort Capellen Luxembourg. Spouse Dominic Mois / Moos. Her parents were Michel Clemen 1787-died Oct 1841 Luxembourg and Margriedt Hoffmann born 1787.

Complier reports some confusion on a possible son??. Henry Moos. According to the story the church book reports a possible son Henry Moos or Moes, married to Elizabeth Penning (dau of Dominic Penning 1839) and had four children. That Henry Moos was born Oct of 1870 in Luxembourg (from Ancestry.com) however, the father Dominick Moos of this family had died by the 1870 census in June 1870 in Wisconsin. The Henry in the church book story may have been closely related but not in the immediate family.

1. Peter Moos 1849-1922 Peter was born 22 May 1849 Hagen, Canton de Capellen, Luxembourg and died 14 Aug 1922 Granville IA buried St. Joseph’s cemetery Granville IA. He came to America when he was about four years old in about 1859. He was a day laborer and later owned a saloon in Granville. He married Margaret Schaach at St. Joseph’s church Granville IA. Peter and Margaret had eight children: Katherine Moos Smiles, Marie Moss Maharras, Peterr Moos Jr., Henry Moos, Margaret Moos Prevas, Susan Moos Halverson, Micholas Moos and John Moos.

2. Bernard ‘Ben’ Moos 1851-1924 Ben was born 8 Aug 1851 Hagen, Canton de Capellen, Luxembourg died 25 Jun 1924 Granville IA buried St. Joseph’s cemetery Granville IA. He came with his parents in 1855 and the family settled near Port Washington Wisconsin, in Holy Cross. Ben or Barney, as he was often called, moved to Winona, Illinois in about 1878 and there he married Miss Anna Sloan in January of 1879. Shortly thereafter they moved to Sioux County and settled on a farm four miles Northeast of Granville where they lived until 1886 when they moved into Granville to live. Mrs. Moos died January 16, 1922. Mr. and Mrs. Moos had no children but at one time were considering adopting one, now Mrs. Anna Leahy, who lived for some time with them. She now resides in Sioux City.

4. Catherine Moos Berg 1855-1942 Catherine was born 6 Jul 1855 Holy Cross, Ozaukee Co. WI died 17 Nov 1942 Granville, IA buried St. Joseph’s cemetery Granville IA. On January 25, 1876, Catherine Moos married Domnick Berg in Winona, Illinois. The couple first settled in Holy Cross,
Wisconsin. From 1882 - 1885 they lived in Alton and then settled in Granville. From 1885 until her death, Catherine lived in Granville, except for three years spent in Grand Island, Minnesota. Catherine and Domnick had seven children:
Margaret Berg Winkel (Albert), Susan Berg Orr (Frank), Virginia Berg, Marie Berg Oliver (Earl),
Bernard "Ben" Berg, John Berg and Henry Berg.

5. Suzanna Moss Linster 1859-1889 Susanna was born 23 Jun 1859 USA died 6 Aug 1889 at 30 years in Sioux county IA. Buried St. Joseph’s cemetery Granville IA. Susanna Moos married Jacob Linster. Susanna and Jacob had no children when she died at the age of 30.

6. Margaret Moss Eulbert 1861-1914 Margaret was born 18 Jul 1861 Holy Cross, Ozaukee Co. WI died 21 Jul 1914 Granville buried in St. Joseph’s cemetery Granville IA. She married John Eulberg, she died of an accidental fall, read her obit on this page. Besides her husband, John, she leaves to mourn children, Peter, Kathryn, Marie, Henry, Edward and Adam, all living at home. One sister, Mrs. Domnick Berg, two brothers, Peter Moos and Barney Moos.

OBITUARY of Margaret Moos 1821-1905

Mrs. Margaret Moos died here early Sunday morning at the advanced age of eighty five years one month and three days. She had been in feeble health the past two months and her demise was caused by old age. She was born in 1820 in Koerch, Kanton Kapellen Luxemburg, her maiden name was Margaret Klemmens.
In 1855 she and her husband crossed the ocean and settled in Holy Cross WI where five years later her husband died.
About that time she also lost her sister who was drowned the ship being burnt up in mid ocean. In 1882 after her children were grown up she came with them to the prairies of Sioux county and began farming near this place. Seven years later she lost her oldest daughter Mrs. Jacob Linster. Four children are still living Peter and Barney Moos, Mrs. Dom Berg and Mrs. John Eulberg. Deceased was one of four generations having six children, twenty grand children and five great grand children.
The funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Catholic church at nine o'clock Tuesday morning Rev. Gerlemann officiating and the remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery. The pall bearers were Max Thorman, Michael Roeder, John Schwebach, Henry Bernard, John Kraus senior, and Henry Weber all old settlers.
Relatives present from other towns were listed.
