California “Cal” Sissel

Cal Sissel, son of James M. and Elizabeth Sissel was born in Muscatine County, Iowa, December 17, 1885, and passed away at his home near Kellerton September 15, 1981, being 92 years, 9 months, and three days of age, the last of a family of eight children: two girls and six boys.

His childhood home was near Davenport, Iowa. The family moved to Decatur County where they located on a farm four miles south of Van Wert when he was 12 years old. Later he came to Ringgold County locating on a farm south of what is now the town of Kellerton, Iowa.

He was baptized in the Methodist Church at an early age.

On December 23, 1903, he was united in marriage to Mattie Mae Penney at Auburn, Nebraska. To this union three children were born: Mae, Ralph, and Glen. The new home was established on a farm south of Kellerton.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, joining at Kellerton on June 4, 1887.

He was a loving husband and father, a good neighbor, a friend to everyone who knew him and always ready to help when needed.

Left to memorialize his departure are his wife and three children: Mae Watson of Ft. Des Moines, Ralph Sissel of Torrington, Wyoming, and Glen Sissel of Kellerton, eight grandchildren: Carolyn, Cathryn, John and James Watson, Betty Joyce, Evelyn Mae, Suzanne and Jane Ellen Sissel; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Emma Sissel; many nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives and friends.

Services were held from the Methodist Church in Kellerton on
September 18th, 1951, at 2 o’clock with the Rev. W.T. Miller officiating.

Interment was in Maple Row Cemetery at Kellerton.
