GARY LEROY WELLS

On December 24, 2020, Gary Leroy Wells, loving husband and father of two sons, passed away at the age of 83.
Gary was born on June 23, 1937 in Mount Ayr, IA to Vivian and Mae Wells. He attended country school through eighth grade, and later graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1956 (what a great year). He kept pursuing his education and eventually earned a Masters Degree in Correctional Administration from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI. He was very proud of this accomplishment!
Gary worked as a corrections officer for 10 years at the Iowa State Reformatory in Anamosa, IA, and continued to serve for an additional 25 years with the Nevada Department of Prisons. He always believed everyone deserved a second chance, and he dedicated his life to the betterment of humanity. His nickname on the job was “Bloodhound”, as he could easily sniff out contraband and trouble.
Gary was married to Karen J. Rice on December 16, 1972. The couple moved to Boulder City, NV in 1978, where they lived for 42 years. They had two sons, Lance and Ryan, and four grandchildren: Lucas, Isaac, Lyla and Liam.
Gary enjoyed many things in life including books, movies and being outside. He loved spending time with his family and friends, and he always interacted with people whether he knew them or not. We always said he could probably talk to a fence post and get a reply!
Gary always looked forward to the start of the NFL season in September so he could watch his beloved Dallas Cowboys. Through thick and thin, it was America’s Team all the way! There was no bigger Cowboys fan.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Vivian, his mother, Mae, and his two sisters, Millicent (Mrs. Ed Knight) and Jeanne. His is survived by his wife, Karen, his brother, James Ray, his two sisters, Janet (Mrs. Carl Fox) and Pat (Mrs. Ken Baker), and his two sons and four grandchildren. A service will be held in Mount Ayr, IA when Covid restrictions allow for ease of travel and gathering.
