Obituary – Glenn Oliver Payton

Glenn Oliver Payton age 77, left this world to join his Heavenly Father Thursday morning, January 23, 2020, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Glenn was born to James Ai and Maxine Irene (McGahuey) Payton on July 17, 1942, at the Payton home on their Decatur County, Iowa farm.

Glenn attended Kellerton Community Schools, graduating high school in 1960. He played high school basketball and followed graduation with attending AIB in Des Moines, graduating with a Business Accounting degree.

He married Donna Fay Mercer on August 20, 1961. Prior to their marriage both lived in Des Moines while Donna worked and Glenn went to AIB. After three years they moved back to the farm Glenn was raised on, starting a farming partnership with his parents. Farming over the years was what Glenn was engaged in up until his death. He loved working with hogs and cattle, being one of the last private hog producers in Decatur County.

He was an active community member serving on boards with the local co-op, Grand Valley Community Schools, church, REC nominating committee and Bloomington Township Trustee. Glenn enjoyed singing in a men’s quartet. He was an active member of Trinity Christian Church outside Decatur, Iowa.

He loved his grandkids and great grandkids, taking them on tractor rides and 4-wheeler rides. He also enjoyed driving his restored Farmall H, John Deere 4020 and ’69 Mercury Montego in local parades, tractor rides, and various car shows. Riding motorcycles was also an activity that he did frequently in the warm months.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna; son, Bryan Payton and wife, Vicki of Davenport, Iowa; daughter, Selena Diveley and husband, David of Highland, Kansas; grandchildren, Nicole Diveley, Chelsea Heinrich and husband CJ, and Tyler Diveley and wife, Tanner; great grandchildren, Kamdyn, Kamryn, Tuff and Timberli; older brother, Gerald Payton and wife, Sharon; younger sisters, Virginia and Lyle Main and Marjorie and Donald Hewlett; and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Glenn in death was Baby Boy Payton, born in 1962; parents, James and Maxine Payton; parents-in-law, Clarence and Lela Mercer; brother- in-law, Donald Mercer; and nephew, Rodney Doser.

Funeral services will be held at Trinity Christian Church near Decatur, Iowa at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2020. Burial will be in the Maple Row Cemetery, Kellerton, Iowa. Visitation is at the church on Monday, 4:30-7:30 p.m. with Family present to receive friends. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
Memorials may be given to Trinity Christian Church in Glenn’s memory.
