Joan Grund, 89, died on January 3, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 6, at Temple B'nai Jeshurun in Des Moines, Iowa, with burial following at the Jewish Glendale Cemetery.

Joan graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended the University of Iowa. She was a member of Temple B'nai Jeshurun her entire life and editor of the Temple newsletter (the bulletin) for over 27 years. Joan worked 15 years as an administrative assistant for the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center.

Joan enjoyed cards, especially poker and cribbage, and was a bridge lifetime master. Her computer and internet savvy were impressive for an 89-year old. She was an accomplished knitter and also enjoyed golf. Joan will be remembered by many to whom she opened her arms and her home when needing a place to stay.

Joan was a fierce defender of her children and will be missed by two daughters, Sally Fisher of St. Louis Park, MN, and Lisa (Bob) Foss of Van Meter, IA, and son, William Grund of Windsor Heights, IA; six grandchildren, Molly (Judson) Eastman, Jonathan (Sarah) Foss, Deborah (Erez) Naggar, Steven Fisher, Shaynna Grund, and Jacob Grund; and three great-grandsons. She is preceded in death by her parents, Max and Mary Wittenstein and brother, Harlan Wittenstein.
