James Barton Tone was born June 27, 1958, in Le Mars, Iowa, to Alfred and Dorothy Tone, and died on April 14, 1981, in Poplar, Montana, at 22 years old. Jim was born into a farming family with eight older siblings and was surrounded by many relatives as often happened in small Iowa towns. At the early age of four, his father passed away after a long illness leaving his mom as a single parent.

Jim began life and education in Le Mars but continued through his high school years in Montana having moved with his mother and older sister, Leah, in 1971. First in Bozeman then graduating from Darby High School where he played football and wrestled. After graduation, Jim renewed friendships in Bozeman and refereed wrestling for a time, spent some time in Reno with his oldest brother, Dan, and in Glasgow with brother Tim. He found his career when he trained and became a police officer in Poplar. He had a heart for the young people of the community and found his place to serve.

What was thought to be food poisoning sent him to the hospital, but it turned out to be an appendicitis attack. A phlebitis incident in high school had ended his football participation and later contributed to his death. So, he returned to Iowa to be buried at Plymouth Presbyterian Cemetery where he is related to many resting there. Services were held at the Plymouth Presbyterian Church which is the family’s home church by heritage.

Jim was survived by his mother, Dorothy Tone (Saco, MT); siblings Liz “B’Ann” (Tom) Nurse of Springfield, IL; Dan (Reno); Paul (Mary) of Arvada, CO; Tim (Mary) of Glasgow, MT; Dave of Helena, MT; Mary (Van) Feldner of Belgrade, MT; and Leah Tone of Reno, NV as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and sister, Martha.
