Funeral services for C. Russell Newcomb, 79, West Liberty, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 19 at the First Church United in West Liberty, with the Rev. Ralph Farmer officiating. Marianne Phelps is the organist and Darren Brooke will sing. Pallbearers are Curt Newcomb, Kenneth Smith, Ronald Brown, Ken Ruegsegger, Wayne Noring and Marvin Dalton. Honorary pallbearers are Bob Petsel, Leonard Larson, William Koellner, Howard Bjork, James Conrey and Glenn Olsen. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge cemetery, West Liberty.

Mr. Newcomb died Feb. 16 at Mercy hospital in Iowa City, following an extended illness.

The son of Charles and Pearl Taylor Newcomb, he was born May 4, 1917 in Middlegrove, Ill. He married Christine Failer March 10, 1939 in Farmington, Ill.

The couple farmed south and west of West Liberty before retiring in 1978.

Mr. Newcomb was a member of the First Church United in West Liberty, where he served as an elder, deacon and treasurer.

He was the deputy assessor for the Wapsi and Goshen townships for many years.

Mr. Newcomb was an agent for White Pigeon Insurance in Wilton, with Grinnell Mutual for 18 years.

He was a member of Liberty Lodge No. 190 of I.O.O.F. for 48 years. He enjoyed being busy and loved fishing, bowling and traveling. He spent many hours helping his son Chuck at his upholstery shop.

Mr. Newcomb is survived by his wife; 2 sons, Charles (Chuck) and wife Louise Newcomb, West Liberty; and James (Jim) and wife Jeanna, Cedar Falls; a daughter, Carol Satke and husband Thomas, Florissant, Mo.; 6 grandchildren; Curt and wife Lisa Newcomb, West Liberty; Christa and husband Clinton Hampton, Wilton; Abby Newcomb, Iowa City; Alison Newcomb, Cedar Falls; and Shelley and Karen Stake, Florissant, Mo.; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 half-brothers, LaVern, California, Mo.; George, Ellisville, Ill.; and Walter, Middlegrove, Ill.; and 2 half-sisters, Verda Perardi and Hattie Jane Maccanelli, both of Farmington, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, a half-sister and a half-brother.
