Wilson Whaley, Pioneer, of Marion County Dead
After nearly eighty years’ residence in this county, Wilson Whaley passed away last Friday. He was a Civil War veteran and was a man that took a deep interest in the welfare of his community. A brief summary of his life follows:
Wilson S. Whaley was born Jan. 13, 1840, in Morgan county, Ohio, and came with his parents to Marion county, Iowa, in 1846. He was married at the age of 19 to Mary Armstrong on June 2, 1859. To them were born six children: Alex Whaley, of Parkersburg, Iowa; Fannie Whaley Heath, of Clear Lake, Iowa; Rilla Whaley Currier, of Indianola, Iowa; O. W. Whaley, Mountain View, Calif.; P. L. Whaley, of Plains, Mont. And L. A. Whaley, of Burlington, Ia. All of the children survive.
Mr. Whaley was preceded in death by his companion in 1918. His entire life, after coming to Iowa, was spent on the old homestead entered by his father from the government, until coming to make his home with his son, Alex Whaley, in Parkersburg in February, 1923. Mr. Whaley enlisted in the service of his country in 1862 and served during the war in Co. A, Fortieth Iowa regiment. He was honorably discharged at the close of the war.
Mr. Whaley always took a deep interest in church and Sunday school work. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Melba Redding, of Harvey, Ia., two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Whaley passed away in Parkersburg March 12, 1926, being 86 years, 1 month and 29 days old at the time of his death. Burial was in Eureka cemetery on the old homestead in Marion county, Iowa, March 15, 1926. - Knoxville Journal
