Jesse Ross was born in Greene county, Pennsylvania in January, 1830, and died in Pomona, California, March 6, 1893. He was married to Miss Ann McClure, October 9, 1852, and moved to Marion county, Iowa, in 1855, bought a farm near Knoxville and lived on it until 1891, when he moved to California. Mrs. Ross died three years ago, and after her death he said the old place never seemed like home. About four months ago he was married again to a Mrs. Thompson, of Pomona. Five children were born to him by his first wife, three of whom preceded the father and mother to the better land, leaving only two to mourn the loss of their father, Mrs. Mary J. Wright, of Knoxville, and William Ross, of Pomona, California.

He united with the Baptist church in early life, when not more than twenty years of age, and from that time on lived a consistent christian life to the end. His wife, in a letter to his daughter writes: "I have never seen a more consistent christian than your father was. I have never known him speak a hasty word or seen a frown on his face." William Ross, who was father when he died, writes: "Father was as well as usual up to the last few weeks. He had complained some of a headache, but not enough to cause alarm, and did not feel any symptoms of paralysis until he was stricken down about eight o'clock last night. After a short time he partially recovered, became conscious and slept until four o'clock, when he awoke, spoke a few words, again became unconscious and died in less than twenty minutes." Mr. Ross was too well known here for any words of comment to add to his good qualities. He was greatly respected by all who know him, and he was regarded as one of our best citizens, a kind husband and father, he always entered heartily into all good work whether religious or reformatory, believing the righteousness of the Lord is an overlasting righteousness and that the Lord would preserve him from all evil when wickedness rose up against him. His surviving children have the truest sympathy of their friends and neighbors in their sad bereavement.
