John Mayer, 72, died unexpectedly Sunday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

John was the son of Harold A. and Mary Eleanor Hoy Mayer. He served with the Coast Guard from 1962 to 1966 on the Michigan Upper Peninsula. While in the service he married Janice E. Herrick, April 18, 1964. They moved to Oskaloosa where he joined his father managing Mayer's Standard Service Station. John closed the station in 1996, and changed the business to a flea market. In 2004, John closed The Trade Station and was then able to spend time on his beloved farm.

John's family includes his wife, Janice, four children, five grandchildren and a brother, Richard (Florence) Mayer of Helena, Montana.

Funeral Services: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 28, Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. Burial: Forest Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation: begins 10 a.m., Wednesday. The family will be at the funeral chapel from 6 to 8 p.m.
