Emma Mariah Sams was born in Wayne county, Iowa, October 29, 1867, and died at her home in Derby, July 7, 1915 at the age of 47 years, 8 months and 9 days. She was united in marriage to Reuben Martin Shores on June 10th, 1883. To this union six children were born. She is survived by her husband and three childen, Frank, Pearl and Carl. Also by her father and six brothers and three sisters and other relatives. She was converted in 1893 and joined the Baptist church. She was a loving wife and mother and a kind neighbor. For the last year and a half she has been a sufferer of that dreaded disease, cancer. She was a patient sufferer and bore her affliction with bravemenss. She requested that after life's little day was closed, to lay her remains in the Derby cemetery.
The funeral services were conducted from the Presbyterian church by Rev. Clark of Chariton, and interment was made as requested. The large concourse of people that attended the services and the floral distribution gave evidence of the good will of the community in sharing each other's burdens. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the entire community.
