On the 8th of April, 1884, Fred W. Newsome was born. His home has always been at the place of his birth, in Union township, Lucas Co., Iowa, until March 1, 1912, when he and his brother, Ray, went to Montana, where they had entered land, then to make their home. On March 15, 1912, came the tragedy which ended his life and brought sorrow to his loved ones and his host of friends, who honor his memory and mourn his untimely death. His education was in country school, high school and college. He graduated from Chariton High School with the class of '04, after which he taught school three years. In the fall of '08 he entered the Iowa State College at Ames and for three years pursued a course in agriculture. In the intermissions of his school work he pursued the occupation of farming, which has been his chief employment since the earliest days of his boyhood. His moral and spiritual life display a continuous page of square dealings with his fellows with not one blot or scratch to mar the record. He professed faith in Jesus Christ and united with the Christian church at Last Chance, January 1906. Of his immediate family he leaves his parents, Wright and Harriet Newsome, one sister, Mrs. Elvessa Johnson, and three brothers, James, Ray and George. The services were held Thursday noon, at Last Chance church. Rev. C. C. Davis preached the sermon on the text "What is Your life; It is as a Vapor." A quartet sang several selections. The congregation filled every foot of standing room, testifying to the esteem in which he was held. Interment was at the cemetery at Last Chance.
