Shirley DaMaris (Dee) Schornhorst was born on February 17, 1929, in Berwyn, Illinois, to Carl Kruse and Hazel (Peterson) Kruse. She died on April 10, 2024, at Windmill Manor in Coralville, Iowa. The family moved to Buena Vista County, Iowa, in the early 1930’s where she grew up on a farm in Elk Township, 15 miles north of Alta. The family attended Immanual Lutheran Church Elk Township and she attended Highview High School, where she graduated in 1946.

Dee went on to Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, where she met the love of her life, Eldo Schornhorst Jr. They were married at Immanual on September 25, 1948. They had two children, Steven Eldo and Joyce Anne. Eldo’s engineering profession took them to several communities in Iowa during their married life including Boone, Spencer, Storm Lake, Cedar Rapids, Spencer again and Harlan. In 2012 they moved to Iowa City to be closer to their family.

Dee loved her social life and never met anyone she didn’t know every detail about within ten minutes of meeting them. She was a talented seamstress making many of her own and her children’s clothing. She loved bridge club, learned to make pottery, enjoyed quilting, Swedish weaving, and knitting.

Dee is survived by her son Steven and wife Doris of Iowa City, and daughter Joyce Edfors and husband Thomas from Lake Mills, WI. Grandchildren Jennifer Winegarden and husband Mat of Iowa City, Matthew Schornhorst and wife Beth of Marion, Iowa, and Anna White and husband Neil of Iowa City. Great-grandchildren Christopher Winegarden, Mya Winegarden, Isabella Dix, Austin Schornhorst, Elle Schornhorst, Audrey White and Conor White. Her brother and wife, Wendell and Diane Kruse of Germantown, TN, and a niece and four nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Avonne Fredrickson and her husband Eldo.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Windmill Manor for all the kindness and love they gave to Dee while she lived there. Also, thank you to the nurses from Compasses for their help in the last days of her life.

Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 17, at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City where the family will greet guests an hour prior to the service at the church. A luncheon will follow the service. Burial will be at Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to The ARC of SE Iowa, Shelter House, or Zion Lutheran Church.
