Pedestrian killed, driver held on OWI

A Mount Pleasant man was killed instantly at 2:15 a.m. today when he was struck by a car while he was walking along Highway 1 seven miles north of Fairfield. He is identified as Dennis John KELLEY, 24, Route 1, Mount Pleasant.

Charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated have been filed against the driver of the car which struck KELLEY.

Officers identified the driver as Judith Gholson, 35, Mount Pleasant. She was being held in the Jefferson County jail late this morning. An unidentified female companion in the car with Gholson at the time of the accident was also being held.

A state trooper who is investigating the fatal accident said KELLEY was dead at the scene.

He reported KELLEY and Gholson had both been seen at the Hide-Out Lounge north of Fairfield a short time prior to the accident. The accident is still under investigation.

Today's traffic death is the third in Jefferson County in 1984.

KELLEY rites Tuesday

Services for Dennis John KELLEY will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. George Koch officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

KELLEY, 24, Mt. Pleasant, was killed instantly at 2:15 a.m. Saturday when he was struck by a car while walking along Highway 1, seven miles north of Fairfield.

KELLEY, a foundry worker at Iowa Malleable Iron Company, was born Nov. 23, 1959, in Ottawa, Ill., the son of Everett L. and Louise J. PIERCE KELLEY. He married Diane HOUSE Aug. 12, 1978, in Salina. His wife and one daughter, Amy Lynn, survive.

Other survivors include his father, now of Fairfield; three brothers, Mike of Fairfield; Brian of Brenham, Texas; and Tim of Lockridge; one sister, Sally ELLARD of Caldwell, Texas; and one step-brother, Luke JAGEN of Lockridge. He was preceded in death by his mother and one brother.

Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association or to the Heart Fund.

Charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated have been filed in Jefferson County Magistrate Court against the driver of the car that struck KELLEY. Judith Kay Gholson, 35, Mt. Pleasant, was released from Jefferson County Jail after posting $632.50 bond.

A trooper who investigated the accident said more charges may be filed.
