FairfieldZane Grey SAFRIT of Fairfield, Iowa, passed away on March 27, 2026, at the University of Iowa Health Care and Medical Center in Iowa City, following a brief illness (note: in Johnson Co., IA).
Born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, Zane lived a life filled with curiosity, homor, and generosity. His travels took him from Chicago to Australia's Great Barrier Reef before he found his true home in Fairfield. There, he thrived as an author, talk radio host, blogger, entrepreneur, business consultant, and avid runner--often logging thirty miles a day, even through the Iowa winters.
Zane was a tireless advocate for the needy and homeless in his community, known for his kindness, laughter, and boundless ideas for making life better for others. Surrounded by close friends, he found deep belonging in what he lovingly called his "Happy Place."
Affectionately known as "Uncle Zane," he was preceded in death by his father, Herman Grey SAFRIT. He is survived by his mother, Sybil SAFRIT BRUCE; sisters Pamela SAFRIT BEAN (David) of High Point, NC, and Gwen SAFRIT TERRY (Mike) of Hickory, NC; nieces and nephew, Erica BEAN, Eban BEAN (Dani), and Deidre COOK (Chris); and many dear friends in Fairfield and beyond.
In Zane's memory, friends should consider contributing to their nearest food bank.
Friends celebrated Zane's life Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Mad Hatters in Fairfield, continuing "until all laughs and memories had been shared." His family in North Carolina will hold a private service at a later date.
