John Leo Caffrey, 76, of Oakton, VA, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born in Cresco, IA, John graduated from Iowa State University before embarking on a career that took him across the country and the globe. He worked with distinction for TRW and later Northrop Grumman, contributing his technical precision and work ethic to a long and successful career as a software engineer. During this time, he married his devoted wife of nearly 45 years, Patricia, and together they built a life full of adventure, living in Alaska, Scotland, and ultimately settling in Virginia. During his children's middle and high school years, he devoted himself to supporting their schooling and activities, attending every track meet, awards ceremony, and event. He was also a dedicated leader of Boy Scout Troop 13, in which he went on adventures big and small with his son and other troop members, including multi-day camping trips and excursions.

After retiring in 2021, John found fulfillment in the simple joys of life. He took great pride in his yard, was always the first to offer a helping hand to family and friends and found immense camaraderie and enjoyment playing in the Northern Virginia Senior Softball league. He was an animal lover, and adored spending time with his granddogs, first Shilo then Emma.

John was the person you called when something needed to be done—and often, he arrived before you even thought to ask. He was known for being reliable, detail-oriented, and committed to giving 110% in every endeavor. With a quick wit and a love for both good and bad jokes, his greatest happiness was found in sharing laughter with his family.

His most cherished role, however, was that of "Grandpa." He doted on his three grandchildren, creating memories that will be treasured forever—from fishing trips with his grandson to shopping outings and tea parties with his granddaughters.

John is survived by his wife, Patricia Caffrey; his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin Caffrey and Natasha Goldvug; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Caffrey-Wuyts and Alexis Wuyts; his three grandchildren, Elise, Luke, and Lynn Wuyts; and his siblings, Kathy Abrams, Linda Moudry, Bill Caffrey, Debra Caffrey, and Mike Caffrey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Wilma Caffrey, and his brother, Gerald Caffrey.

A Celebration of Life will be held in his hometown of Cresco, IA on November 24; details will be shared by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Northern Virginia Senior Softball league (https://www.nvss.org/donations) or the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria in John's memory.
