William Benson, son of William and Frances Benson, was born at Norfolk, St. Lawrence county, N. Y., Aug. 5, 1844, and died at St. Paul Minn., Nov. 29, 1916.
He moved with his parents from New York in 1854 and came to what then was the territory of Minnesota, settling in Fillmore county. Oct. 18, 1863, William Benson enlisted in Co. A 2nd Minnesota Cavalry and was discharged April 2, 1866.
Mr. Benson was united in marriage to Emma Ayers, Dec. 12, 1871, and resided on a farm in Harmony twp. until 1884 when they moved to Cresco, Iowa. In 1899 the family moved to Waterloo, returning to Cresco in 1903, where they resided until the wife passed away in 1909. Since that time Mr. Benson made his home with a war comrade, Mr. Gilbert Nafey of St. Paul, Minn.
He is survived by five children, Walter E., Bernard L., Howard W., Henry Earl, and Mrs. Justis Ludden and one sister, Mrs. A. D. Perry. Two children, Arthur and Olive, preceded him to the better land.
