G. W. Mastin was born in Monroe county, York state in 1836. He came to Grundy county with his father, R. M. Mastin, and located on a farm two miles south of where Wellsburg is now located. He remained on this farm until the spring of 1894, when he moved to Grundy Center. He farmed 560 acres of land for a number of years.

As will be noticed by the fore-going sketch Mr. Mastin is one of the pioneers of Grundy county, having come here with his father among the first settlers. "Wash", as he is famliarly called, is also one of the pioneers of Grundy county democracy. He can always be counted on to do his share in anything for the advancement of that party. Mr. Mastin has held different offices in the county democratic central committee, and is at the present time chairman of that body.

Although intensely partisan Mr. Mastin does not make enemies, but friends welcome him everywhere for his pleasant genial ways.

--Grundy County Democrat (Grundy Center, Iowa), 11 March 1897
