HON. JOHN W. LUKE, chairman of Iowa railway commission, died at his home in Hampton. Franklin Co., at midnight Friday last after an illness of five days. Capt. Luke was born in New York, but removed to Illinois at an early age, served three years in the Fifteenth Illinois infantry, being severely wounded at Shiloh, and was mustered out as captain of his company. Afterwards he was elected sheriff of Jo Davies county, was afterward admitted to the bar and practiced in Galena until he moved to Hampton in 1881. He served in the lower house in 1885 and in 1890, and was elected railway commissioner on the Republican ticket the same year. He was re-elected in 1893, and has since served as chairman. Capt. Luke leaves a widow and nine children.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born March 31, 1840 and died Dec. 21, 1895. He is buried in the Hampton Cemetery.
