Death of H. S. Canfield.
The following from the Fayette Leader will interest many of the old timers in Decorah:
After a lingering illness H. S. Canfield who for forty years has been engaged in the hotel business in Fayette, passed away late in the afternoon of Christmas day. For many months he had been unable to be on duty but his death came rather suddenly, an attack of grip hastening the end. The funeral was held at the Fayette House over the destinies of which he had so long presided, on Monday afternoon at 1:30 the service being conducted by Rev. C. W. South, pastor of the Congregational church.
He was born in Jamestown, N. Y. in July 1835 so he was over 80 years of age. Back in the old days when the railroad ran to Conover and Decorah was in connection only by stage and Mr. Canfield was engaged in the business. The coming of the railroad to Decorah closed this business and he moved to Fayette and finally became engaged in the hotel business.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born July 23, 1835. He is buried in the Grandview Cemetery in Fayette, IA.
