Funeral services for Irene M. Petersen, 92, Wheatland, were held Sept. 3, 1997 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Wheatland, with the Rev. William Kanne officiating. Barbara Ruchotzke was the organist and pallbearers were Robert Schneider, Warren Nebergall, Greg Wiese, Robert and Tom Diercks, and Dr. B. Frank Kastantin. Honorary pallbearers were Dale Petersen and all of her former students. Burial was in St. Paul's church cemetery.

Mrs. Petersen died Sept. 1 at Wheatland Manor Nursing Home, following a long illness.

The daughter of Samuel and Rose Clemmens Kinney, she was born Sept. 2, 1904 in Lowden. She graduated from Lowden high school and the University of Northern Iowa. She married Dr. William L. Petersen on June 2, 1934. He died in 1992.

Mrs. Petersen taught school for 11 years at Public School No. 2, south of Lowden.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed needlework, quilting and reading. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Martha Aid, Homemakers, the nursing home auxiliary, the Eastern Star, Past Matrons Club and Nile. She was a 4-H leader for many years and was active in organizing the Wheatland library.

Mrs. Petersen is survived by a daughter, Mary Ellen and husband William J. Knudsen, Grand Mound; a grandson, Jonathan W. Knudsen and wife Amy, Iowa City; a granddaughter, Milissa K. Hoffman and husband Bern, Pleasant Valley; and a grandson, First Lt. Jason M. Knudsen and wife Holly, Great Falls, Mont. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Harold Kinney.
