F. W. MYATT

The subject of this sketch is a member of the firm of Myatt & Heide, attorneys-
at-law and abstractors. He was elected mayor of Maquoketa, March 29th, for a
two year term. He was born on a farm in Sharon Township, Clinton County, Iowa,
July 24, 1866, the eldest son of Simon and Louisa Myatt who emigrated to this
country from Birmingham, England in 1865, and settled in the neighbor county of
Clinton. Like many of those seeking new homes in this country, they endured
various hardships before their final settlement and location, which
unfortunately was soon followed by the death of the father in 1871, leaving a
devoted wife and two children-Frederick W. and Walter H. to mourn their
irreparable loss.

Our subject, like most of the good material now days, grew to manhood on the
farm, receiving his early education in the district school. While not otherwise
engaged in his studies, he was hustling around watching the crops grow and
doing such other work as usually falls to the “Cub” on the farm.

He attended the Northern Illinois College at Fulton, and afterward reengaged in
farming until 1893. Coming to Maquoketa in that year he read law in the office
of Hon. G. L. Johnson for about two years. Afterward he attended the State
University for six months and was admitted to the bar in May, 1896. He began
the practice of law in this city the same year and was appointed referee in
bankruptcy in 1896, which position he still holds. In 1896 he was chosen county
chairman of the Republican Central Committee, succeeding H. E. King, which
position he held for two years.

On April 4, 1899, he was happily married to a most accomplished young lady,
Miss Gertrude Cooper, of this city. But her untimely death occurred on July
8th, 1903, leaving the bereaved husband and a bright little son, Frederick
Paul, besides a large circle of friends to mourn her demise.

Mr. Myatt is a man of broad, liberal views and scholarly attainments and by his
courteous and upright dealings with his fellowman has won for himself a large
and steadily growing clientele, doing a general law business, practicing in all
courts.
