DIED - At the residence of Mr. Alden, of McGregor, Friday last, at 6:00 A.M., Caleb Southmayd, aged about 45 years.

His disease was contraction of the stomach from dyspepsia or indigestion. He was buried by the authorities, but on examination of his papers there were found $500 in money. We learn he declined to pay Mr. Alden for nursing him several weeks, "because he had no money."

His life was miserly, and, sad as it may sound, we believe his death brought no tear of sorrow to a human heart. 'Tis said the grave should bury all faults, but it is not wrong to warn the living by noticing instances calculated to guard them from the ignoble deeds of the dead.

~North Iowa Times, Wednesday, September 9, 1868; pg 2

Note: Likely buried in Pleasant Grove, or another cemetery near McGregor. Confirmation is needed. Wife may have been Harriet (Baker) Southmayd, her obit is posted.

Earlier additional info.
The North Iowa Times, Aug. 19th, 1868 printed the following notice: "We regret to know that Caleb Southmayd, a long-time citizen of this place is very ill with dyspeptic fever at the home of Mr. Alden, near the levee.
