Marlys Elaine Meyer, the daughter of Ralph and Florence (Versteeg) Fie was born July 3, 1934 in Sheldon, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Sheldon and Alta, Iowa. Her family moved to Spencer when she was in Kindergarten and this is where she received her education. While in high school, she was proud to be a Majorette in the Spencer High School Marching Band. She graduated from Spencer High School in 1952.

For fun, she enjoyed baby-sitting for various families, delivering groceries for her dad’s Jack Sprat Grocery Store, and going to the movie theater every week. After high school, she got a job as a telephone operator in town.

Marlys met Cleber Meyer at the Trianon Roller Skating Rink in Spencer, Iowa in April 1953. They were married on August 16, 1953 at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, Iowa.

From this union, Marlys and Cleber were blessed with four children. Dawn (Meyer) Hansen, David Meyer, Todd Meyer, and Tara (Meyer) Lopez. (Marlys had always wanted four children.)

When they purchased a service station and it became Cleber’s Service in 1955, Marlys helped out however she could. Eventually, she became the book-keeper. Over the years, the service station became a popular Spencer institution. People could always find Marlys and Cleber either at the station or at one of their favorite coffee shops around town. Marlys and Cleber finally retired from business in 2008.

Marlys was very family-oriented and kept the homefires burning when Cleber was away. She loved spending her time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved gardening, growing flowers and vegetables, and just messing around in the dirt. She was creative and had a love for art and painting. Marlys always loved the movies and she handed down that love to her children. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time relaxing at Lake Okoboji.

Marlys was involved in several of Spencer’s civic organizations. She was a member of the Eastern Star of the Masonic Lodge, spent several decades as a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, and was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church for more than 70 years.

Marlys always supported her husband in everything. She helped run Cleber’s election campaigns when he was elected Mayor of Spencer for 10 years.

Throughout her life, Marlys taught her children and grandchildren many things. However, her most important lessons were: the value of honesty; the importance of being good to all people; and to love your family, friends, and community.

Marlys passed away surrounded by her children at the Good Samaritan Society in Superior, NE on Monday, December 28, 2020 at the age of 86 years, 5 months, and 25 days. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother Larry Fie, brother-in-law Cletes Meyer, brother-in-law Elmer Gealow, sister-in-law Betty Meyer, son-in-law Louis Hansen, and all of her aunts and uncles.

Left to cherish her memory are her brother, Bob (and Linda) Fie of Apple Valley, CA; sister-in-law, Jackie Fie of Sarasota, FL; sister-in-law, Clysta Gealow of Marshalltown, IA; daughter, Dawn Hansen of Warsaw, MO; son, Todd (and Lyn) Meyer of Jackson, MN; daughter, Tara (and Jesus) Lopez of Seward, NE; her grandchildren: Haley (and Nick) Coffey of Superior, NE; Leah (and Kurt) Schnakenberg of Sedalia, MO; Liberty Meyer, Glory Meyer, and Chance Meyer of Jackson, MN; Antonio Lopez and Andres Lopez of Seward, NE; And her great-grandchildren: Lou and Macoy Schnakenberg of Sedalia, MO; and Katherine and Charlotte Coffey of Superior, NE. Marlys will also be missed by her nieces and nephews, cousins, many friends and neighbors, and all of her coffee friends.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be created in Marlys’ name. Please send cards and memorials to:
