MRS. R. H. PEAVEY CALLED BY DEATH
END CAME SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY
AN ESTEEMED MARCUS WOMAN
--

The Grim Messenger again invaded this community during the past week, and took one of its beloved women, Mrs. Robert H. Peavey, whose death was sudden and unexpected.

Mrs. Peavey had a severe sickness last fall, but during the past several weeks had been feeling well. On Sunday, February 4, she took ill but at no time was her condition considered serious, and even up to the hour of her death, there were no alarming symptoms of the approach of death. The end came at seven o’clock last Saturday evening and was unexpected.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. church. The remains were laid at rest in the Marcus cemetery. The pall bearers were G. M. Barr, Wm. Pitts, C. R. McConnell, C. V. Peters, James Rae and P. C. Derthick.

Many old-time friends were present to pay respects to the departed and offer sympathy to the saddened relatives.

Those from a distance present at the funeral were Mrs. M. E. Hinkley, of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Will Wirt, of Parker, S. Dak.; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Maltby, of Aurelia; Mrs. Dill Bryant, of Cleghorn; and Mrs. George Akers and Miss Mae Henderson, of Cherokee.

Mrs. Peavey’s early life was spent in Epworth, where she attended the public school at Epworth Seminary. After her marriage, they came to Cherokee County where they lived on a farm in Tilden Township until six years ago when they moved to Marcus. She united with the M. E. Church of Amherst, when it was organized in 1888, of which she continued a faithful member.

The decedent is survived by her husband, two sons and one daughter.

The decedent, whose maiden name was Catherine Maria Briggs, was a daughter of Otis and Esther Briggs and was born at Epworth, Dubuque County, Iowa, Oct. 12, 1849, aged 67 years, 4 months and 5 days. She was married to Robert H. Peavey Dec. 31, 1868.

To this union were born four children: Carrie Maria, who died at the age of seven; Allard Peavey and Araminta Pitts of Marcus and George Otis, of El Paso, Texas. All were present who was unable to attend on account of sickness in his family.

Mrs. Peavey was faithful in her church obligations. She was an active worker in the Woman’s Foreign Missionary society and the Ladies’ Aid society and whenever possible, was present at church services.

Mrs. Peavey was a lady of most excellent traits of character and retained to the close of her life a keen interest in life and in current happenings. With a kind and affectionate disposition, she was loved by her family and relatives and friends and neighbors, and her death is keenly felt by all those who were intimately acquainted with her.
The sorrowing husband and children and other relatives have the sympathy of the community in their hour of sadness. (Source: Ferrin Family Scrapbook provided by Marily Kofmehl)
