Geo. W. Harrison was born near West Union, Fayette County, Iowa, Nov. 20, 1857. When he was 22 years of age, he came to western Iowa.
April 4, 1883, he was married to Miss Elma Francis Hall and first settled in Silver Township, where they lived until 1888 when they purchased the farm in Grand Meadow Township which has been their home ever since. To this union seven children were born, four boys and three girls, all survived him until six days later when his youngest son Georgie was called to follow him in death.
The funeral was held at the farm residence conducted by Rev. Allen, M. E. pastor of Pierson, Iowa.
The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery which is but a few rods from the house.
(To the above obituary, which was sent in by the family, we add the following tribute to Mr. Harrison, written by J. C. Burgess, an old friend of the deceased and published in the Cherokee Times:
He was a man loved in the community where he had lived for nearly twenty years. He enjoyed the confidence of all who knew him and has held offices of honor and trust for years. He was widely known in his chosen vocation as a successful stockman. He loved the freedom of the farm, good stock he delighted in and of which his yards and pastures were always well filled and well cared for. He was radical in his views, but his teachings were always of a strictly moral, temperate and uplifting nature. He was of independent mind, thinking for himself regardless of others’ opinions. A leader not a follower. The community has lost a worthy and useful citizen, and his family have lost a loving and thoughtful husband and father. Our deepest sympathy and sincere prayers are for them in this hour of their unspeakable sorrow. (Source: Ferrin family scrapbook)
