Hulda Engel, 91, of Cherokee and formerly of Avon, S.D., died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19 at the First Baptist Church in Cherokee. Graveside services will be held on Saturday afternoon at the Avon Baptist Cemetery in Avon, S.D.
Hulda was born on July 5, 1912, at Avon, S.D. to Theodore and Katherine (Vilhauer) Engel. She graduated from Avon High School in 1930. She attended Southern State Teachers College at Springfield, S.D. She taught school in Avon Public Schools for 15 years. After the death of her parents, she accepted a teaching position in Cherokee in 1949. She taught in Cherokee for 29 years as an English teacher and the last seven years as the junior high librarian, retiring in 1978. She attended many sporting events while working for the Cherokee community schools. Hulda enjoyed traveling and has been in all 50 states. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cherokee, the American Baptist Women, had taught Sunday School, Bible School, played the harp at church and sang in the church choir at her home church in Avon and also a mixed quartet. She was a member of the WaTan Ye.
