ART JOHNSON KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT AT LOS ANGELES, CALIF.
Arthur Johnson, 39, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Johnson of Cherokee, died early Saturday in Los Angeles, Calif., of injuries received when struck by an automobile at a street intersection New Years Eve. His wife, the former Ada Olson of Meriden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Olson, and their 15-year-old son, LeRoy, former student at Wilson high school, were seriously injured and little hope was held for their recovery.

This tragic news was received here by Mr. and Mrs. Johnson in a telegram Friday night and telephone message early Saturday.

Johnson who formerly worked for Joel Benson’s Pastime pool hall and in other places in Cherokee, had been living in California about two years. At the time of his death, he was doing carpenter and mason work.

Details Not Received.
Details of the accident were not received but Mrs. Fred Johnson said her son, his wife and their child were struck by the same car as they crossed the street in Los Angeles.

Before moving to California, the Johnsons lived on Sherman Avenue here. Johnson several years ago was a candidate for county sheriff.

He was born November 27, 1903, and spent nearly all his life in Cherokee. He attended the local schools.

Survivors are four sisters – Elvira, Waterloo; Freda, Mallard; Esther in Minnesota; and Ethel, Grafton, IA; two brothers, Leslie, in the U.S. Army stationed at Boise, Idaho, and Harvey, Wichita, Kan., and his parents here. The parents live in the Jess Loucks property near the Loomis Produce building in the south part of the city.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be wired here sometime Saturday. The parents probably will not be able to attend, Mrs. Johnson said.

MRS. ART JOHNSON SECOND VICTIM OF CAR ACCIDENT
Mrs. Arthur Johnson, 42, former Meriden resident whose husband was fatally injured when struck by a car New Year’s Eve in Los Angeles, Calif., died Saturday of injuries received in the same accident, relatives were informed late Saturday. A 16-year-old son, LeRoy, remains in critical condition.

The message was received at 6 p.m., Saturday by Mr. and Mrs. Emil Olson of Meriden, parents of Mrs. Johnson. Earlier in the day, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Johnson of Cherokee received a wire telling of the death of their son.

Details of the accident still have not been received here; Fred Johnson told The Daily Times. The three members of the Johnson family were struck by a car as they walked across a Los Angeles Street, Johnson said he was told.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, who left Cherokee about two years ago, leave eight children – LeRoy, 16; Wayne, 11; Darrell, 9; Galen, 7; LaVerne, 5; Lorraine, 2: Oscar Nord, 21 and Alva Nord, 19.

Relatives here are awaiting word of funeral arrangements. Ben Olson, brother of Mrs. Johnson and Bert Lundell, brother-in-law left Sunday morning for Los Angeles.

Mrs. Johnson was born June 15, 1900, at Omaha, and spent most of her life in Cherokee county. She attended the Meriden school. Her first marriage was to Oscar Nord, who died about 18 years ago. She had been married for about 16 years to Arthur Johnson of Cherokee.

Survivors include the parents, Two sisters, Mrs. Bert Lundell, Cleghorn and Mrs. Merle Prunty, Marcus and a brother, Ben Olson, Meriden.

LeRoy Johnson, 15, Recovers; Parents Fatally Injured
LeRoy Johnson, 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Johnson formerly of Cherokee, who were both fatally injured when struck by a car as they crossed a Los Angeles, Calif., street New Year’s Eve, is reported recovering from serious injuries in a Los Angeles hospital.

His grandfather, Emil Olson of Meriden, received word that LeRoy’s condition was better and that now it was hoped he would recover. The message said also that joint funeral services for the parents would be held at 1 p.m., Thursday in California, but no other details were given. Ben Olson, brother of Mrs. Johnson and Bert Lundell, her brother-in-law, are representing the families of the couple at the final rites.

Olson said no word has reached here yet giving a full account of the accident which claimed the lives of the parents and seriously injured one of their eight children.

Bert Lundell and Ben Olson returned from Los Angeles Sunday after attending the funeral of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Johnson who were killed by a car. Six children of Johnson’s returned with them and will make their home with relatives. Alvah Nord, sister of the children will return to California Saturday to make her home with her brother Oscar who is in the air corps.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Johnson, who died in Los Angeles General hospital January 2, 1943, were laid to rest January 7, 1943.

Double funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were held at Wenz Mortuary in Los Angeles at 1:00 p.m. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial cemetery in Burbank.

Mr. Johnson was born November 27, 1905, in Rock township, Cherokee county and spent most of his life here. He was confirmed and baptized in the Swedish Lutheran faith.

Mrs. Johnson was born June 15, 1900, in Omaha, Neb., but has spent most of her life in Cherokee county.

Her first marriage was to Oscar Nord who died 18 years ago. To this union two children were born, Oscar, 21 and Alvah, 19. Mrs. Johnson was again united in marriage with Arthur Johnson March 3, 1927. To this union were born children, Leroy, 15; Wayne, 11; Darrel, 9; Galen, 7; Laverne, 6; Lorraine, 2. These eight children survive their parents.

Mr. Johnson also is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Johnson of Cherokee, and also his four sisters, and two brothers.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Olson of Meriden, and her two sisters, Mrs. Merle Prunty of Marcus, and Mrs. Bert Lundell of Cleghorn, and her brother, Mr. Ben Olson of Meriden.

They are both mourned by a host of relatives and friends.
